Job Description

Bioinformatics lead, rapidly growing biotech. NGS target ID & validation. Python / R ML/AI. Cambridge - remote Your new companyOne of the most exciting new biotechs in the UK are looking to expand their existing computational team after recently closing a funding round. The company focuses on applying cutting-edge genomic technologies to develop novel medicines to treat a range ofdiseases.Working closely with their existing target discovery and drug development teams, youll be joining a group focused on driving forward the analysis and interpretation of large scale genomic datasets for target ID and biomarker discovery by applying complex datascience techniques. Youll also be bringing new ideas to the company on bioinformatics, statistical and AI / ML approaches. The company are investing heavily in R&D providing a number of opportunities to grow your career and make a significant impact to patients around the world, as well as having a collaborative and friendly atmosphere.Your new roleThis is a leadership position within the Bioinformatics and Data Science team, taking on a mix of responsibility for leading people, projects and technical strategy. Youll be reporting into the Head of Data Science and working closely with the C-level leadershipof the company, meaning you can have a direct and significant impact on the companys strategy and operations. This is a permanent position with strong potential for remote/home working and will lead target validation efforts, particularly "telling a story"around a target to get it into the companys pipeline. Main responsibilities will include a mix of:

  • Acting as a technical lead on projects;
  • Driving bioinformatics and statistical analysis programmes;
  • Develop and apply novel strategies for target ID & validation, alongside biomarker discovery;
  • Assess and optimise algorithms, models and computational approaches;
  • Lead from the front when it comes to bringing new ideas and approaches to the table;
  • Liaise with stakeholders and external collaborators;
  • Working with other researchers to analyse a variety of data sets, eg phenotypic, biomarker or genomic data;
  • Hands-on programming in R, Python or similar languages;
  • Using data science, statistics or machine learning approaches to analyse and interpret large scale omics data sets;
  • Data interpretation and visualisation;
  • Line managing a small team.
For candidates who want to be technically / project focused and not take on line management responsibilities this is also an optionWhat youll need to succeedAs well as strong communication skills for dealing with internal collaborators and stakeholders, you should have:
  • An MSc / PhD (or equivalent experience) in machine learning, statistics, bioinformatics, biology, medicine, computer science or a similar area;
  • A knack for (and love of) solving problems;
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong programming skills in Julia, R and/or Python or a similar language;
  • A track record utilising a variety of statistical approaches to analyse data, with Machine Learning / Deep Learning experience an advantage;
  • Experience working with NGS / genomics and multi-omic or other biological data sets;
  • Good knowledge of version control
  • Expertise with target identification, target validation and/or biomarker discovery for drug discovery / development
