Job Description

Role OverviewWe are looking for an experienced Lab Assistant to join a leading research department of Health Sciences on a temporary contract. You will be assisting with the collection and processing of samples as well as the recording of data, whilst ensuring strict Health and Safety regulations are adhered to.Successful candidates will need to be able to demonstrate previous experience within a similar role, notably the ability to aliquot and centrifuge samples, laboratory housekeeping and maintenance, data input and records management.Please note: There will be regular Saturday working and lone working required.Specific ResponsibilitiesReceiving Biological Samples

  • Collect samples from post room
  • Open sample packaging in Class II microbiological safety cabinet
  • Scan each collection tube using barcode scanner into spreadsheet
  • Email spreadsheet to data management team
    • Blood Fractionation
  • Put closed whole blood collection tube into centrifuge
  • Centrifuge for 10 minutes at 2000rpm (pre-programmed)
  • Remove closed tubes from the centrifuge and place in Class II microbiological safety cabinet
    • Aliquot Samples
  • Scan collection tube and aliquot tube
  • Manually pipette serum
  • Record volume in a spreadsheet
    • Storing Samples
  • Ability to aliquot samples
  • Scan racks of serum tubes using 2D rack scanner
  • Use trolley with polystyrene box and dry ice to transport racks from laboratory to freezer room
  • Store racks in the -80 ULT freezer
  • Record position of racks in Sample Management Database
    • Laboratory Housekeeping
  • Assist with housekeeping and safety in the research laboratories.
  • Ensure safety regulations and relevant codes of practice are implemented, carry out and record routine safety equipment checks and arrange repair work as required liaising with suppliers. Maintain the cleanliness and organisation of microbiological safety cabinets and fume hoods, monitor condition of refrigerators and freezers and stocks within the laboratory.
  • Overall maintenance of the laboratory area and equipment according to health and safety regulations
    • Knowledge, Experience & SkillsLaboratory Experience including:
  • Sample Aliquoting
  • Centrifuging of Blood Samples
  • Housekeeping and Safety experience
    • Administrative Experience including:
  • Records management (logging items for receipt)
  • Data input (hard copy logbooks and/or computerised records)
  • Email experience
