Job Description

Job Title: Head of Assessment StandardsContract Type: Full-Time, PermanentSalary Range: £65,000 - £80,000Location: Cambridge What it’s about These are exciting times for OCR as we look to implement a range of strategic initiatives and to modernise our systems and strive to find creative and innovative ways to improve our products and services to customers.With the quality and fitness for purpose of OCRs qualifications being paramount, the Head of Assessment Standards role is one of the key roles in OCRs wider senior leadership team, with responsibility for ensuring the quality and fitness for purpose of all OCR assessments, assessment materials, associated assessment processes and the quality of OCR Examiners’ and Assessors’ contributions to them at all stages of and throughout the assessment life cycle in line with OCR and regulatory requirements.Reporting to the Director of Assessment, the Head of Assessment Standards also plays a key part in ensuring that OCR meets its business objectives and in working with the UK regulators and other stakeholders.The post can be based in either OCRs Coventry or Cambridge offices. Regular travel to the other office is a requirement for the post as the Standards teams are located on both sites.What you’ll be doing The successful candidate, as a senior member of the team, will be responsible for leading two teams: the team of Assessment Standards Senior Managers and the Standards Quality team who ensure that the quality of OCR assessments, and assessment materials reflect the relevant specifications, are fit for purpose, are of an appropriate standard, are error free and comply with regulatory and legislative requirements.Other key aspects of the role include:

  • In partnership with the Head of Assessor Management, leading on ensuring that all examiners and assessors are appropriately recruited, selected, trained, supported, deployed and appraised, so they provide fit-for purpose and error-free assessment tasks.
  • Leading and developing all staff in own teams to ensure they carry out their job responsibilities effectively.
  • In partnership with the Head of Research and Technical Standards leading on all aspects of standards-setting and standards maintenance on all matters related to all of OCR’s qualifications. This includes the determination of grade boundaries for qualifications.
  • Leading the development and deployment of appropriate approaches and practices to ensure that OCR has effective systems to underpin standards-determination processes.
  • Leading on all aspects of quality of marking, moderation and verification, their monitoring and intervention approaches.
  • Collaboration on behalf of OCR with relevant Joint Council for Qualifications, regulatory authority and awarding body staff on matters related to assessment practice affecting standards.
  • Collaboration with senior staff in other OCR and Cambridge Assessment areas on all assessment standards matters that have an impact on the current and future work of those areas.
  • This role requires the ability to engage and build excellent relationships with internal senior stakeholders and governance bodies across OCR and Cambridge Assessment, as well as external stakeholders and customers, understand their strategic business drivers and requirements and ensure that their expectations are met.The workload can be described as high throughout any twelve month period but there are significant periods when the workload is extremely demanding:
  • During major examination and awarding periods – mid-May to early August and to lesser extent January/February & November
  • Any development period for qualifications
  • During all of the above, some weekend working may be required. During the examination and awarding periods it is highly likely that leave will not be available to the job holder.What we’re looking for We are looking for an experienced senior leader in assessment who is a strong communicator, facilitator and advocate for standards, quality and business change; qualified to degree level or equivalent. In addition, we are looking for the following skills and experience:Skills

  • Knowledge of external organisations involved in education, training, occupational skills and work based training and their roles
  • Experience in maintaining standards in one or more qualifications
  • Experience of effective chairing of meetings
  • Teaching and/or examining experience very desirable
