Job Description

Bioinformatician Location: Cambridge UK, however we encourage flexible working and can consider home working requests.Contract: Permanent and full timeWe will be reviewing candidates on a regular basis. Please do not delay your application to avoid disappointment.Cancer Research UKs Therapeutic Discovery Laboratories (CRUK-TDL) is the in-house CRUK drug discovery unit, with a principal focus on establishing and prosecuting biologically-themed multi-project alliances with commercial partners. CRUK-TDL are building a Core Data and Informatics Team to provide a hub of technical know-how, best practice and subject-matter expertise to our scientists.We are looking for Bioinformaticians to contribute their subject matter expertise to this team, supporting multiple aspects of the drug-discovery project lifecycle. The role will be based at the Functional Genomics Centre (FGC) located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Cancer Research UK and AstraZenecas new state of the art CRISPR screening facility.Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Integrating and interpreting functional genomics and biological pathway data, from in-house and public sources, to identify and validate novel oncology targets and inform disease positioning
  • Working proactively with domain experts and project teams to help answer critical-path biological questions, and support day-to-day lab work
  • Contributing to the development, packaging and running of custom pipelines for the analysis and interpretation of functional genomics data
  • Providing critical assessment of current data sources, processes and analysis tools
  • Contributing to the development of best practices for data analysis and visualisation for CRUK-TDL scientists

  • PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field (i.e. biological sciences or bioinformatics)
  • Experience analysing data from high-throughput genome-wide experiments and interpretation of the results in a functional-genomics framework
  • The ability to formulate testable hypotheses to provide insight on complex biological problems
  • An understanding of good experimental design and the application of statistical methodologies for the interpretation of experimental data
  • A good working knowledge of statistical packages (R strongly preferred) and scripting languages (Python strongly preferred)
  • Experience applying bioinformatics techniques to identify novel drug targets would be beneficial
  • Excellent communication skills, a collaborative mentality with the ability and confidence to work independently where required, and a commitment to continued development.
