Job Description

Service, Test & Commissioning Engineer (Rail)Burton Upon Trent – With travelGood base salary, bonus, good pension & excellent other benefitsINTRODUCTIONAs a world leading engineering company with a proven track record in providing advanced engineered solutions, predominantly to the rail industry (locos, not infrastructure), as well as tunneling and construction, my client has a history and pedigree that spans almost a century.They have also developed some novel and cutting edge locos and equipment that provides additional capabilities and functionality to the locos.Due to an increased workload, the award of some very prestigious contracts and a healthy order book, they are now looking to bring in an additional Service, Test & Commissioning Engineer to be involved in the company’s growth.THE ROLEDue to the knowledge on company products necessary to be confident being out in the field, this will be a staggered role. This means an initial period working with the fitting teams, service, test and commissioning teams and others in the business, in order to develop a strong understanding of the equipment and methodologies.Part of this will be on the assembly floor and some shadowing of the service, test and commissioning team members and allow you to gain commissioning and test experience of the product systems, what to expect in the field and how to overcome any issues.So you’ll be:

  • Fault finding on a wide range of systems (mechanical, PLC, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic)
  • Commissioning on site in a railway environment (or similar industry)
  • Testing products in final build
  • Implementing upgrades and changes to a product on site
  • Training operators on site (classroom and in use)
  • Supporting warranty and ongoing service contracts
  • The role involves UK and some overseas travel, so you’ll to have no restrictions and a full UK driving licenceYou’ll also often be working alone on site (often outside) and with customers present, so resilience, good communication skills and being able to think outside of the box are traits that will be useful.THE PERSONIn order to be considered for this Service, Test & Commissioning Engineer role it is expected that you will have:
  • Relevant engineering qualifications or certification relating to your craft
  • Exposure to mechanical fitting on Locomotives,off-highway vehicles or similar
  • Sufficient experience in a similar service, test or commissioning role
  • Commutable (working from home is not an option for this position unless you can fit a train into your boot!)
  • Relevant rail industry experience (locos not infrastructure)and the ability to work alone or as part of a small but enthusiastic team
  • A strong ability to work from mechanical schematics / engineering drawings
  • An ability to work with customer’s engineers, both verbal / written and face to face on site
  • An ability to work with multi-disciplined teams
  • A good understanding of site and workshop Health and Safety
