Type 31 Senior Naval Architect (Structures) Based from Bristol, Plymouth or Rosyth£41,658 - £48,770 dependent on experience and locationSF34887About the roleEnergy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support servicesto the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme, as well as, providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Also, withongoing additional framework agreements, infrastructure projects, export markets and research & development projects. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK.We are looking for a Senior Naval Architect to join the Type 31 Team from Bristol, Plymouth or Rosyth and support this high-profile project as the Scantling Lead. As the Senior Naval Architect, you will be part of the Marine Structures team, which supportsa wide range of engineering projects throughout all phases of the design lifecycle, however, you will have a focus solely on the Type 31 programme.Responsibilities:

  • Whole-ship scantling calculations in accordance with Lloyds Register Rules and Regulations
  • Producing analysis and substantiation reports for ship scantlings, standard structural details, welding schedule to the required time, cost and quality requirements
  • Use of 2D and 3D CAD software
  • Checking of design calculations and supporting scantling drawings ensuring quality of outputs
  • Liaising with Lloyds Register Plan Approval office, detail design teams, production teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of the design
  • Presenting design solutions at design reviews and supporting interfaces with internal and external customers
  • Developing innovative design solutions that meet functional, manufacturing and installation requirements
  • Resolution of technical and production queries
  • Ensuring procedures, codes and standards are correctly identified and applied to engineering and technical activities
  • Being aware of health, safety and environmental requirements

As well as working for the UKs leading naval support business, we will also provide you with all the training, support and benefitsthat you would expect from a global company.What do I need to do the roleYou will have experience in structural engineering with naval or commercial marine related design experience, this is essential.You will need demonstrable experience in structural engineering and using Finite Element (FEA) Analysis. You will have demonstrable experience of using 2D & 3D CAD packages, experience with working with production teams as well as good written and verbalcommunication skills.Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in naval architecture, marine engineering (extensive experience in relevant field will be considered);Ideally you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold, or working towards, Incorporated or Chartered status;What else do I need to knowYou will work 36/37 hours per week Monday to Friday with flexible working and you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance.About Babcock InternationalFor more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services.
