Job Description

Position: Learning MentorLocation: Bristol, BS10Daily Pay Scale: £120-£180 a dayEmployment Type: Permanent position after an initial probationary periodPurpose of the Job: As a Learning Mentor, your primary responsibility will be to identify and work with students who display challenging behaviours, disaffection to the curriculum, and barriers to learning. You will help these young peopledevelop a positive attitude towards learning by addressing their social, emotional, attitudinal, and behavioural needs. Your role will contribute to improving their social skills, emotional literacy, and academic progress.Principal Duties:

  1. Lead activities for students disaffected with learning, creating engaging and inclusive learning environments.
  2. Maintain clear communication with school staff, parents, and other professionals involved, ensuring a coordinated approach to meeting the needs of each student.
  3. Record and update relevant information daily, providing regular reports to tutors, class teachers, and departmental pupil focus meetings.
  4. Collaborate with the Head of Department, teaching staff, SENCO, and SLT to identify the most challenging and disaffected students, design support programs, carry out group and induction programs, evaluate progress, and report outcomes.
  5. Identify, bid for, and maintain appropriate support resources for all learning mentors within the school.
  6. Network with relevant outside agencies to provide appropriate programs and input for identified students.
  7. Develop emotional literacy among all students on your caseload, delivering PSHE group lessons/sessions and working closely with tutor groups.
  8. Seek relevant professional development opportunities and access courses and materials to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  9. Work independently with individuals and groups of students as directed by the Heads of Department and/or Head Teacher/Deputy Head Teacher/Assistant Head/SENCO.
  10. Provide planned support during arrival, break times, and lunchtime in collaboration with other department staff.
  11. Support the Head Teacher/Named person in Child Protection issues, including maintaining comprehensive systems for recording and reporting concerns.
  12. Prepare students for employment and/or apprenticeships, helping them transition to the next phase of their educational journey.
Requirements:
  • Suitable for teachers seeking a non-teaching role, HLTA professionals seeking progression, individuals interested in mental health support, or those with a social work background.
  • Experience working with students with social, emotional, and mental health challenges, particularly in a PRU or alternative education setting.
  • Knowledge of strategies and interventions to address challenging behaviours and disaffection to learning.
  • Strong communication skills to liaise with staff, parents, and external agencies effectively.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students.
