Research AssociateJob number ACAD104621Division/School - School of Earth SciencesContract type - Open EndedWorking pattern - Full timeSalary - £33,797 - £38,017Closing date for applications 16-Aug-2020Research Associate in Volcano Geophysics- 2021Applications are invited for a NERC- and NSF- funded Research Associate, initially for 12 months, based in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. This position is linked to the NSFGEO-NERC Collaborative Research: "Linking geophysics and volcanic gas measurements to constrain the transcrustal magmatic system at the Altiplano-Puna deformation anomaly."The RA will be working with partner institutions in the UK (Universities of Bristol and Oxford), the USA (Cornell University, University of New Mexico, Washington State University) and Bolivia (Observatorio San Calixto) to deliver a broad-scale, multi-disciplinary research project related to understanding of magmatic and volcanic processes and their link to large-scale ground deformation. The RAs task within this project will be to analyse geodetic data, primarily from the Global Positioning System. They will be working with data from established continuous and campaign GPS networks around Uturuncu volcano in Bolivia. They will link the GPS observations with timeseries data from InSAR, and with other geophysical observations including microgravity surveys, seismic observations and magnetotelluric data. They will also contribute to data modelling using finite-element analysis. Doing so will provide a holistic interpretation of the magmatic and hydrothermal processes occurring at the volcano and enable an analysis of sources of long-term volcanic deformation. There may also be the opportunities to join multidisciplinary field trips to the Bolivian Andes in the spring of 2021 to collect GPS and microgravity data. The successful candidate will hold (or will shortly obtain) a PhD in Geophysics or an aspect of Earth Sciences.
