Job Description

Principal Engineer - Civil Structural & ArchitecturalCavendish NuclearBristol Technology CentreSF29513About the roleHere at Cavendish Nuclear we are looking for a Principal Engineer to join us in our new office at Bristol Technology Centre. You will be a lead member of the team undertaking traditional and bespoke designs of reinforced concrete, steel and masonry structures for decommissioning and new build projects - principally in relation to the design of structures associated with nuclear waste management and the operation of mechanical handling equipment and associated electrical systems. The nature of the projects will include design to various normal and extreme loading scenarios, including seismic.Working closely with internal engineering teams and with key client contacts, you will be instrumental in developing team workloads and project plans. You will supervise the complete design for structures of varying complexity, and advise on sound engineering solutions for challenging projects, including structural dynamics and seismic design. In addition, establish, lead and maintain the engineering configuration, ensuring that the overall design intent and integrity is maintained throughout development. This will involve carrying out reviews on the design teams progress and work tasks at critical stages of the design including:

  • The supervision of design drawings, calculations, reports and other required engineering documentation.
  • Producing, reviewing, verifying and approving technical specifications.
  • Assessing tender returns and providing technical support to those packages throughout the design, construction, installation, and commissioning, operational and decommissioning phases of the project.
  • Leading on design reviews including hazard and operability studies, optioneering studies, construction and installation and design changes.
  • Preparing quality plans for single and multi-discipline work packages.
  • You will be key to ensuring our projects are delivered to time and cost. So as well as working closely with the Engineering Manager and Project Manager on the project plan you will also supervise senior engineers and technicians in identifying any issues which may impact upon delivery.As well as working for the most high-profile nuclear organisation in the UK, we also offer a supportive work environment where innovation is at the heart of what we do.What do I need to do the roleYou will be Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering and be a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer of ICE of IStructE. You will naturally need significant experience of design in reinforced concrete and steelwork gained in the nuclear industry and including design for seismic loading. You will be able to demonstrate significant post degree experience covering a range of engineering and / or technical topics including design, analysis, specification, safety case support, construction, commissioning, decommissioning and supervision of staff and contractors.Designing to legal, health and safety, and environmental standards is hugely important. So youll need to have extensive knowledge of:
  • National design codes and standards and their application in design ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSA18001.
  • Legal and regulatory standards, including construction (Design and Management) regulations.
  • Nuclear Site Licence Conditions and their application in design.
