Job Description

  • This is an opportunity to join an exciting commercial biotech, offering market leading science within an emerging sector. In line with growth, they are looking for a Head of Microbiome R&D with proven hands-on delivery of the design and execution of human microbiome research into human health applications. You will most likely have a background in working in commercial or academic research for the human microbiome as a Senior/Principal Scientist, or currently leading an R&D team around the microbiome.What you’ll be doing
  • Setting up and continuously improving high-quality, commercial-scale NGS assays for diverse sample types.
  • Designing, executing, and analysing of NGS 16S and metagenomic data.
  • Working alongside experts to develop the bioinformatic (and biostatistics) pipeline.
  • Drive research of new human microbiome related products, which includes planning, executing, documentation and validation.
  • Integration and relationship with lab technicians and lab scientists.
  • Liaising with Head of Technology to maintain the integrity and advantage of the company’s data.
  • Helping to improving and implement new QC measures in lab protocols.
  • Identifying new technologies and advancements to gain a competitive edge.
  • What experience you’ll need to apply
  • Proven success of hands-on setting up and frequently used NGS platforms, including Oxford Nanopore, for microbiome research, including both wet lab work and bioinformatic analysis.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of NGS applications such as whole genome sequencing, 16S and other amplicons, RNA-seq, and microbiome analysis.
  • A PhD degree, and/or a postdoctoral experience in the Microbiome field, preferably in Human microbiome with deep understanding of the common scientific methods and data analysis techniques in the field.
  • Resilient and adaptable to fast-paced work environment.
  • Proactive approach to learning, able to stay abreast of the latest techniques, tools, literature, and advancements in the field.
  • Ability to (lead and) manage complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Independently identifying problems and troubleshooting that may adversely affect performance.
  • Technical and scientific writing expertise for general, professional, and scientific audiences.
  • Strong project management skills and leadership ability to train and help other team members.
