Frontend Developer – remote (JavaScript/Sass/CSS/HTML) - Bristol£60kMy client, an award-winning Publishing House, is on the lookout for an experienced mid-levelFront End Developer with an interest in working across the Full Stack.This role is based predominantly at home and limited travel to London is needed once we return to a new normal.You will join a small, agile development team that is helping evolve our sites. This role provide an exciting opportunity to work on the redesign of our news websites so they better reflect the brands they are associated with and create a positive experience which readers remember.What will the role involveThis role will involve contributing to the Actionable Journalism project, which will enable users to take relevant and rewarding actions in response to articles, such as signing petitions, completing polls or quizzes, and purchasing related products. Following on from work on the redesign will be an opportunity to contribute to a re-platform to provide the future foundation to deliver our content at our considerable scale.Our client are constantly reworking and modernising the frontend tech stack and will build upon this through our redesign and re-platform work. For this they are exploring the use of web components and up-to-date build systems, as well as better ways to manage page layout and rendering.The current frontend is primarily built in vanilla JS within an ES module structure, Sass for CSS and Pug templates for producing HTML. Code is designed and written to be modular, utilising individually deployable components. NPM is used to manage dependencies between projects. Build systems are primarily Grunt and gulp, with heavy use of associated tooling (Browserify, Babel, with Karma/Mocha for testing).The main products use a Java-based CMS for content creation and delivering the presentation layer, whilst increasingly our other systems use Node.js.Ideally, we are looking for someone to:Be experienced in frontend development but with an interest in working across the stack.Be highly skilled in client-side vanilla JavaScript, Sass/CSS and producing clean, semantic HTML using a templating system.Have knowledge of modern web standards and APIs and a desire to learn new technologies.Have experience with frontend build systems and with automated testing of frontend code.Have an appreciation of performance implications in browsers and the associated tooling/metrics available.Work collaboratively within an agile web development team, be self-directed and be happy to work on their own initiative.Any of the following would also be useful:Experience with Node.js and Express.Experience with frontend frameworks (e.g. React).Appreciation of SEO and accessibility standards.Knowledge of GraphQL.Important Information: We endeavour to process your personal data in a fair and transparent manner.
