ASD Teaching Assistant January start

Job Description

Five Education are working with a mainstream primary school based in central Bristol. They are looking for an LSA to work in their special needs class. They use autism-friendly approaches such as Social Stories and use communication methods such as Makaton. The ideal candidate will have experience using methods such as these.This role will start in January 2021Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting children 1:1 and in group work
  • Using autism-friendly approaches such as Social Stories and Now and Next
  • Helping with differentiation, ensuring that the child can access the curriculum - which may not be at the expected levels for their age
  • Working with the class teacher to encourage positive behaviour
  • Working with outside professionals who may be providing additional support
  • Helping to develop and utilise coping mechanisms to manage overstimulation
  • Essential Criteria:
  • At least 12 months of recent experience supporting children with ASD in a care/ education setting
  • A mindful and therapeutic approach
  • Able to use your initiative
  • Knowledge of autism-friendly approaches
  • Knowledge of practices such as Colourful Semantics and TEACCH
  • Calm and able to help students regulate their emotions
  • Two recent child based references and relevant DBS/ Police checks
  • Able to work 8.30-3.15 5 days per week term time only
  • Five Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all of the staff we employ to share this commitment. Successful applicants will be required to undergo checks including a barred list check, reference checks and will need to have a DBS; there will also be a face to face interview.
