Job Description

Mechanical Engineer - Automotive, Blue Light, Catia, £25,000 - £30,000 basic salaryOur client design and manufacture all types of vehicles ranging from front line Accident and Emergency vehicles, police vehicles, rescue vehicles, mobile clinics and treatment centres.They are fast growing and one of the most technically capable and advanced specialist vehicle converters in the UK.Operating from a 48,000 sq. ft. purpose-built facility, they are continuing to create and bring together an unrivalled team of designers, engineers, production specialists, business managers and dedicated and highly skilled workforce.Due to increased and rapid growth an opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager. Position:

  • Reporting to the Engineering Manager with minimum supervision but collaboratively in a small team, the position is primarily responsible for the generation of mechanical engineering drawings from conceptual ideas and/or specifications to preliminary 3D layout modelling of installations, assemblies and components, analysis, final design solutions and detailed drawing production.
  • Education:
  • Degree/HND educated in a mechanical engineering or allied engineering discipline.
  • Mechanical Engineer Experience:
  • Experience of design engineering work in the emergency vehicle conversion industry, primarily ambulance or other blue light sector or similar vehicle conversion types.
  • Experienced user of `Autodesk Inventor 2021, 3d design solid modelling and sheet metal design suites.
  • Experienced user of `Catia v5 3d design solid modelling and sheet metal design suites.
  • Familiarity with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mechanical structures and assembles is desirable using Autodesk Inventor 2021 and/or Catia v5 3d design packages.
  • An understanding of current road transport vehicle technologies, systems and construction is desirable.
  • Process engineering experience is desirable in an automotive production line environment.
  • An understanding of the mechanical properties of metals and plastics and their specification in component design.
  • Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:
  • The generation of detailed metal fabrication components and assembly drawings with a thorough understanding of appropriate tolerancing and weld symbol application as appropriate for the design and an understanding of the manufacturing processes of their manufacture.
  • The generation of detailed plastic fabrications assemblies and component drawings and an understanding the manufacturing processes of their manufacture.
  • The generation of the engineering `Bill of Material (BOM) for a vehicle conversion assembly contract using Navision `Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) system.
  • Executing the new drawing releases and the Revision control of designs.
  • Familiarity and understanding of road vehicle mass distribution requirements, calculation and legalities.
  • Liaising with production personnel to resolve vehicle assembly installations and sub-assembly manufacturing issues as necessary to maximise build efficiencies.
  • Liaising with suppliers as necessary to facilitate the effective manufacture of components from drawings provided.
  • Supporting Sales personnel on Tender contract submissions and vehicle conversion specifications and presentation drawings.
  • Working closely with the engineering development department personnel on new conversions prototype builds and design product developments.
  • Some process engineering skills would be ideal.
  • Liaising with supply chain personnel to facilitate effective supply of engineering parts as required.
