Job Description

Aston Students Union are looking for a creative Web Developer with the knowledge to maintain and make their websites amazing and the ambition to create inviting pages users cant help but look at.Web DeveloperStarting Salary £23,487Birmingham, B4 7BXFull Time, Graduate Role, Fixed Term (22 Months)Aston Students Union (ASU) is a membership organisation for students studying at Aston University. The SU is led by elected student officers supported by a staff team. It is an independent charity that provides a range of services to enhance the studentexperience including advice and support, a student representation framework, over 100 clubs and societies, an accommodation service, headline annual events and much more.Due to increasing demand, we have created a brand-new Web Developer role to develop, maintain, fix, troubleshoot and provide technical support for all ASU digital platforms.We are looking for skilled individual with exceptional amounts of enthusiasm to help continue innovating and developing our online presence. You will be responsible for maintaining and developing all our websites and digital platforms - help us make theASU electronic services as positive as those we offer in person!Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop the SU websites and digital platforms to make them the best in the business and to provide a seamless user experience.
  • Lead on the development of any new digital platforms.
  • Assist website and digital platform users with technical problems and troubleshooting.
  • Provide support and training to Students Union staff, volunteers and officers.
  • Integrate existing and third-party services.
  • Monitor website analytics, data and statistics and produce reports to identify areas for improvement and development.
  • Determine the best plug-ins and applications to provide all digital platforms with new features and functionality and install them accordingly.
  • Evaluating code to ensure it meets industry standards, is valid, properly structured and is compatible with browsers, devices and OS.
  • Maintaining an understanding of the latest web applications and programming practices through education, study, and participation in conferences, workshops and groups.
Essential Skills and Attributes:
  • A "can do" positive attitude to challenges.
  • Experience in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP.
  • Team player and willingness to work closely with other colleagues.
  • A willingness and desire to work in a democratic organisation with student leadership.
  • A first degree or working towards (preferably 2:1) in Maths, Science, Applied Science, Computer Science, Engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • Commitment to the principles and practices of equality and diversity.
  • General understanding of web design & usability principles.
  • Data analysis skills.
  • Ability to be a proactive self-starter, effectively getting on with work.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work supportively with others.
  • Able to work flexible hours.
  • Committed to supporting our charitable vision and delivering high quality services to students.
Desirable:
  • Experience of using Google Analytics.
  • Understanding of SEO and PPC.
  • Understanding of student led organisations.
  • Knowledge of managing data protection.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of working with student representatives.
