Job Description

Principal Asset Sustainability Advisor & Team Leader - SES Asset Management DivisionYour new roleAs a Principal Asset Sustainability Advisor & Team Leader you will have a great opportunity to apply your technical and sustainability skills to contribute to the delivery of National Highways Net Zero Strategy.Youll lead a small team within our Asset Management Division responsible for the development and implementation of policies, processes and technical advice supporting our Net Zero Strategy for Construction and Maintenance. This includes responsibility forthe Divisions Net Zero Programme objectives, delivering elements of our Carbon Management System such as the Low Carbon Opportunity Register.You will use your sustainability skills to coordinate carbon reduction activity across our assets. This will include working with our technical specialists to ensure standards and specifications are updated to support asset or material specific net zeroroadmaps.This role will require you to develop collaborative relationships with internal colleagues, including Operations and Major Projects, to ensure that carbon reduction opportunities are effectively implemented. You will also engage with external stakeholdersand suppliers to identify new innovation and ideas that can contribute to our net zero objectives.This is a great opportunity to further develop your career, working with industry leading experts within National Highways who are dedicated to sustainable delivery, quality, safety and making a meaningful contribution to our customersWhat youll be leading onLead the delivery of the Asset Management Divisions Construction and Maintenance Net Zero Programme objectives. This will include coordinating the technical input from asset specialists within the division on near or net zero strategies, materials, standards,specifications and processes.Manage Net Zero Programme governance , including reporting progress to National Highways Central Carbon Team.Act as a source of asset sustainability expertise to support the development of related policies and operating procedures within the National Highways Asset Management Strategy.Manage technical consultancy and research suppliers within National Highways Innovation Programme - ensuring best value, alignment to corporate objectives and the effective management of consultants and budgets.Support the continual review of standards, working with asset specialists to ensure carbon reduction is a key theme i.e. within the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB), Specification for Highway Works (SHW), BSI, CEN, etc.Ensure that published carbon reduction processes, guidance, standards, specifications are communicated effectively to stakeholders, partners and the supply chain to support implementation.Contribute to National Highways sustainability representation at external committees, steering groups, seminars and workshops.Lead, motivate and develop a small team of up to 2-3 asset specialists, to ensure it has high quality people who are engaged with the team activities and wider business objectives.To be successfulYou will be a chartered engineer and/or environmental specialist with a relevant professional institution (eg ICE, IEMA) or hold equivalent recognition of your technical suitability for the role. Proven experience in these technical disciplines:Carbon Management in Infrastructure (PAS2080) and its practical application.The principles of sustainable asset management and its inclusion within policy, procedures and standards.Knowledge of Highway design standards and specifications (DMRB/ MCHW).A broad appreciation of the life cycle of highway assets; the materials, products and technologies used and emerging low carbon innovations.Experience of delivering change through innovation or new opportunities. Experience of leading and developing small teams to deliver required objectives.Experience of managing stakeholder relationships to achieve desired outcomesExperience of delivering projects using recognised project management methods to ensure objectives are met.A bit about usThe Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES) directorate at National Highways is an exciting place to work.
