Job Description

Your new roleTo provide financial support, insight, challenge and partnership to Programmes/Divisions within the Major Projects (MP) Directorate of National Highways. This role represents a senior finance position and the holder is responsible both for the developmentof financial strategy and processes within their area and for maintaining strong communications with the Central Financial Business Services (FBS) Team.This role will require regular travel to our office based in Birmingham.What youll be leading on

  • Finance Business Partner (FBP) to Programmes/Divisions within the Major Projects Directorate. A member of the leadership team(s) and the senior point of contact for all financial issues for that area of the business.
  • Provide specialist support, guidance and advice on key strategic and commercial issues and influence performance outcomes. Support the Business by providing objective analysis of business performance, highlighting key issues and problem areas and makingrecommendations for action where appropriate.
  • Coordinate and act as the first point of contact for financial performance, maintaining regular contact with the Lead Finance Business Partner and Management/Financial Accounting Teams to facilitate effective two way communication regarding the financialprospects, current company pressures and priorities for the area of the business they are aligned to.
  • Responsible for performance management and forecast robustness, ensuring that the Business Leadership, Assistant Finance Business Partners and FBS Central Teams are all clear about their respective responsibilities in ensuring that the company meets itsfinancial and non-financial targets.
  • Lead the Business Planning Process for your area(s) of responsibility, ensuring that timelines and requirements are understood by all and met, that the budget set is achievable and meets the objectives of the organisation.
  • Support the MP Programme/Divisional Director(s) in presenting the budget to FBS and other forums as required.
  • Champion the adoption of new business processes and support their embedment.
  • Lead the development of robust business cases, through proactive engagement with Senior Responsible Officers, project teams and Subject Matter Advisers to ensure that the case is acceptable for submission to the relevant Board and that the CFO is adequatelybriefed to contribute meaningfully to the discussion of each case.
  • Ensure that all significant decisions taken are supported by robust financial analysis and provide challenge to the decision-making process to ensure optimum use of company resource.
  • Take responsibility for financial governance and controls, coordinating with Financial Control and Corporate Assurance teams to understand and communicate the current framework, ensure it is being adhered to and identify breaches and opportunities for improvement.
To be successful
  • Experienced in the presentation of analysis and clear documentation into the risks, volatility and sensitivities of key cost behaviours presented alongside the financial performance.
  • Ability to understand and analyse complex information and present it simply and accurately.
  • Understands the relationship of a project to a portfolio or programme of work and is able to perform a post project review to ensure that learnings are documented, measured and communicated for future guidance.
  • Project management knowledge to the equivalent of a PRINCE2 Practitioner. Has project managed a project successfully, leading a discrete project from inception to delivery.
  • Experience of dealing with a range of taxation matters.
