BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST1.0 wte PostAFC Band 6Full Time 37.5 hours PER 7 DAY WEEKThe Birmingham Women’s Hospital site (part of the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust) provides a range of health care services to women and families across the West Midlands and further afield. We treat around 50,000 people a year across the disciplines; last year more than 8,000 babies were born under our care, making our maternity unit one of the busiest in the country.The Haematology and Blood Transfusion department provides a comprehensive diagnostic and clinical service tailored to the specialist needs of the hospital for Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Neonatal and Fetal Medicine Directorates and undertakes the Sickle cell and Thalassaemia (SCT) national screening programme for the trust. The service is UKAS accredited and the laboratory is an IBMS approved training establishment for Biomedical ScientistsThe Department has a vacancy for enthusiastic, motivated, and suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist. Applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK, and HCPC registered. Post registration experience in a UK Haematology/ Blood transfusion department is required. The successful applicant will work in rotation with other staff in all sections of the department, and following training will take part in the current 24/7 shift rota over a 7 day working week. Although this is a combined trust this position is to work at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital site only..Applications are also welcome from experienced band 5 Biomedical Scientists wishing to start or complete their Specialist Portfolio; however note that progression to band 6 would only be enabled upon successful completion of the Portfolio.Haematology is equipped with ABX Pentra Nexus and P60 full blood count analysers, Sebia Capilliarys2 Flex for Haemoglobinopathy screening and Werfen TOP 350 for coagulation studies. Blood Transfusion utilises Immucor Neo and Echo analysers for routine grouping, antibody screening and investigation and antenatal serology. Cross-matching is carried out using Grifols DG Gel Technology.
