Job Description

Speech and Language Therapist Up to £37,890 DOEPermanent RoleFull or part-time working will be considered39 weeks Term time working arrangementAn exciting opportunity has become available for a passionate Speech and Language Therapist to join the one of the leading school centres for Conductive Education in the UK, based in West Sussex.The Role: Our client requires an experienced speech and language therapist to lead on service development initiatives and evidenced based practice around dysphagia management. You will clinically support other speech and language therapy colleagues at the school, lead on training specific to eating and drinking needs and work towards embedding practice amongst all school staff.Key Responsibilities:

  • To contribute to the planning and delivery of a communication strategy for a group/groups of students to enable and support their learning.
  • To be responsible for the day to day implementation of agreed aims and programmes reflecting the Conductive Education ethos of the school, as a member of a trans-disciplinary team.
  • To contribute professional knowledge and expertise to the team for a particular area, such as AAC.
  • To implement group and individual communication programmes in collaboration with the team and to be involved in associated planning and preparation and share expertise and knowledge.
  • To be responsible for the integration of the school’s communication strategy to enable pupils to access the whole curriculum.
  • To assess, plan and implement low and/or high AAC pathways for children who require a communication strategy.
  • To develop and create AAC resources, delegating to others as appropriate.
  • Assessment of communication and oral skills needs for group /groups of pupils
  • Demonstrate and model good facilitation to support eating and drinking, communication, and access to the curriculum.
  • To be responsible for implementing the eating and drinking policy and monitoring and advising on this area in collaboration with colleagues.
  • To work with the Speech and Language Therapy Manager to develop the curriculum and communication elements throughout the school to achieve the outcomes of the School Development Plan.
  • To be a member of a trans-disciplinary team of staff meeting all the pupils’ needs.
  • To contribute to the development of the overall programme of the group.
  • To contribute at Reviews and other relevant meetings and to liaise with parents/guardians and external medical services.
  • To provide good standards of physical and emotional care
  • To provide intimate care.
  • To ensure the physical environment is maintained to high standards of safety, hygiene and presentation.
  • About You:
  • The successful candidate will have a sound knowledge of the IDDSI framework and should be at minimum level C’ in accordance with the RCSLT Dysphagia competency Framework.
  • You should have knowledge of supporting young people with a total communication approach and supporting with use of AAC.
  • High level of communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to be flexible, respond positively to change, and work effectively under pressure, deal with conflicting priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience of collaborative working with a range of professionals.
  • Knowledge of cerebral palsy.
  • Further training and supervision can be offered in this area in line with the IDDSI and dysphagia competency framework.
  • The school is committed to safeguarding children and young people. Any successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
  • The work involves the physical facilitation of pupils/students and the moving of furniture and equipment.
  • Schedule:
  • 8-hour shift
  • Monday to Friday, term-time, plus 5 INSET days
  • Weekends (sometimes)
