Job Description

Water is essential to daily life, and that means our business is always open.What youll be doing:We are currently recruiting either a single-skilled mechanical or dual-skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance technician to be based at our Thames Gateway Advanced Water Treatment Works. You will support the operations and control room team in ensuringthe overall operation of the site to treat brackish water abstracted from the River Thames and produce wholesome water fit for drinking into the London water network. Thames Gateway AWTW is the only water production site in Thames Water that utilises desalinationas part of its water treatment process. You will be working within a multiple disciplined team that follow a robust maintenance plan as well as getting involved in installation projects, mechanical fault finding, project commissioning and emergency breakdownrepairs to ensure our plant operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.Specific responsibilities will be:

  • Working on various stages of water treatment and their associated equipment,pumps, gearboxes, valves and penstocks, chemical handling and dosing equipment, air compressor and pneumatic plant, sampling equipment
  • If you are a dual skilled mechanical & electrical technician you will also work on three-phase motors, motor control centres including variable speed drives, power distribution equipment and actuators
  • Investigate process plant failures and carry out repairsas quickly and efficiently as possible in order to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and carrying out repairs duringincidents
  • Carry out scheduled, planned maintenance work on mechanical or mechanical and electrical equipmentin compliance with company standards and procedures in order to approve to improve process resilience
  • Provide technical advice to the wider team and contractors, referring to up-to-date technical knowledge, and provide training or support for technical trainees if required
  • Participate in a 24/7 out of hours stand-by rotawill be required after a suitable period of training and assessment
  • Additionally, you will be required to undertake health and safety checksand take ownership of your own and your colleagues health and safety by escalating any concerns to your manager and resolving them yourself where possible
What qualifications and experience are we looking for
  • Experience of working on large industrial plants and mechanical systems
  • BNC/HNC in engineering, NVQ or City & Guilds level 3 in mechanical or mechanical and electrical engineering is essential
  • Qualification in mechanical maintenance NVQ 2/3 would be beneficial although not essential
  • A valid driving licence is essential
  • Previous experience in a mechanical or mechanical/electrical apprenticeship. If electrically trained, 18thedition qualification will also be beneficial
  • Physically fit as you will work in confined spaces and use breathing apparatus with successful completion of the appropriate training
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues is critical
