Job Description

Cathedral Appointments are currently seeking a Production Engineer to join our client’s well-established manufacturing business near Tiverton. Working in a multi-disciplined team, your role will be to collaborate with NPD team to ensure efficient on time releases of new products focusing on design for manufacture, assembly and test. You will ensure appropriate production processes are defined and implemented prior to release. Once accepted the production engineer will be responsible for maintaining the production test and calibration equipment specifically related to electrical and electronic sub-assemblies. Maintenance of the product to end of life, especially with respect to component obsolescence is an important part of this roleResponsibilities:

  • Production test and acceptance of new products.
  • Developing and overseeing the equipment and machinery used in the production processes.
  • Design and maintenance of standard work for in house production, CEMs and critical mechanical suppliers.
  • Collaborating with new product development teams, influencing the design process to incorporate manufacturing requirements from the initial stage:
  • Contribute to preliminary design reviews:
  • Gain early understanding of mechanics, electronics, software and test requirements being considered and their potential impact upon production and suppliers.
  • Develop enabling production strategies with NPD team, production and suppliers e.g. DFA, new production processes.
  • Contribute to PFMEA by developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute critical design reviews:
  • Assist with production candidate build where appropriate.
  • Ensure early involvement with CEM to define production, test and quality requirements.
  • Oversee the production of draft standard work instructions (SWI).
  • Oversee pre-production procurement and build.
  • Manage pre-production verification and process validation.
  • Acceptance of production release:
  • Ensure validation of product BoMs is completed by NPD prior to release.
  • Ensure validation engineering drawings is completed by NPD prior to release.
  • Ensure validation CEM data packs, assembly instructions and quality standards are completed by NPD prior to release.
  • Work closely with CEM on new data packs, following through to ensure correct quality of data and delivered assemblies during life of product.
  • Validation assembly, test processes and training including that of CEM and other critical suppliers.
  • Gain intimate knowledge of jigs, fixtures and test equipment design and operation, developing and implementing maintenance schedules for them.
  • Main signatory for production release of new product.
  • Ensures that NPD team, purchasing plus external suppliers agree and document quality standards for PCBAs and critical mechanical parts.
  • Provide technical support to the supply chain from a production perspective.
  • Oversee inbound PCBA inspection and test from key CEMs.
  • Conduct investigations if issues arise ensuring that corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
  • Implement and drive PCRs (product/process change requests) and engineering change notifications where appropriate.
  • Working to ensure the most cost-effective manufacturing process flows are defined when introducing new products into operations.
  • Identify, Investigate and implement continuous improvement ideas / suggestions where applicable (PRF)
  • Primary responsibility for product documentation modifications and parts obsolescence. Liaising with NPD and purchasing.
  • Design, implementation, maintenance and control of standard work ensuring it reflects current best practice.
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support for the production cells to enable customer schedule adherence while significantly reducing and ultimately eliminating production’s reliance on NPD Engineers.
  • Work with production cell teams supporting the implementation of lean manufacturing methods including 5S, standardised work, process measurement and control.
  • Mentor for cell leaders for improved methods of manufacturing assembly and test.
  • Requirements:
  • Degree in electrical or electronics engineering with hands on experience of its application.
  • Experience in a similar role working in a low to medium volume CEM including SMT, PTH, Coating Box build operations.
  • Experience of new product introduction including simultaneous engineering.
  • Six Sigma Yellow/Green belt certification.
  • Practical experience of Lean Manufacturing techniques especially 5S and SOP (SWI).
  • Thorough understanding of manufacturing and design processes.
