Job Description

The starting salary for this role is£11.04 per hour plus a 15% annual leave allowance.Want to work locallyLike tobe outdoorsInterested in enthusing groups of primary school-age pupilsThe Safer Travel Team at Surrey County Council have launcheda new Walking Training programme called Feet First across Surreys primary schools, targeting 78-year-olds (i.e.pupils in Year 3).Our aim is to provide primary school pupils withthe necessary road safety skills and knowledge through a series of in-class and on-road training modules.Our ambition is to deliver an informative, robust and entertaining programme of learning that highlights the necessary road safety skills, providing Year 3 pupils with the foundation to feel safe navigating Surreys roads and encouraging them to walk toschool.Who would we like to hear fromNow that we are fully operational and the course has launched into schools, we are looking for urgent hires in the following districts / boroughs: Mole Valley, Woking, Tandridge and Epsom & Ewell. However, we also wish to hire across all remaining boroughsof the county due to demand.We would like to hear from people who want to make a difference for primary school-age pupils, by encouraging them to feel more confident traveling actively and sustainably to school byequipping them with the necessary road safety knowledge and awarenessskills. You will be directly leading the on-road training sessions with small groups of pupils, so you will feel confident engaging children of 78-years-oldboth in the classroom and during the on-road training elements of the course. You will also be confidentworking on your own, as some courses may not have another Instructor attending with you.Each Walking Instructor must:

  • Undertake Continuing Professional Development as required, including Safeguarding and First Aid training.
  • Maintain an e-portfolio.
  • Agree to anenhanced DBS Disclosure and Barring Service checkand the Childrens Barred List check.
  • Have a basic understanding and knowledge of road safety, on-street signage and crossing points.
  • Ideally have experience of supervising groups of children, or can demonstrate at interview the best ways of supervising groups of children.
  • Be able to collect quotes, images and videos which will be used to form case studies and promote the course on an ongoing basis. This collection of quotes, images and videos will be in line with Surrey County Councils specific policies concerning collectingquotes, images and videos across all age groups.
  • Be able to use online administration to check work allocation, record availability and submit pay and expenses claims.
Full training for the role will be taking place in early September when the new academic year launches, with the need to get new hires out and delivering shortly after.Typical working patternThis is a flexible term time position with no set or guaranteed hours.The courses only run in the mornings, with Walking Instructors beginning at 9.20am, providing enough time to get to a school after school drop-off.To find out more, please visit our Walking Training Page.
