Job Description

With a starting salary of £26,907 per annum (NHS Band 5 equivalent) actual salary for 36 hours per week, across 42 weeks of the year, pro-rata to £31,273. The role is term time, plus an additional 15 days per year. For more information, please visit MyBenefits for Surrey County Council staff.We are interested in supporting Newly Qualified Therapists to work towards their autonomous status, as well as therapists already qualified and looking to continue their development.The School-Aged Speech and Language Therapy Service is part of Surrey County Council’s local SEND offer, working collaboratively in the Vulnerable Learners team in Surreys Children, Schools and Families Directorate, with other teams like educational psychology and specialist teachers.We aim to deliver the right support at the right time through assessment and intervention and equipping families and professionals with the skills and resources to work together to help and support children with SLCN. We follow the Balance model to offer universal, targeted and specialist support for children, families and the school workforce to work with children and young people with EHCPs (Education, Health & Care Plan) and those at SEN (Special Education Needs) support.We work across four geographical quadrants, each managed by an Area SLT Manager and with a skill mix of speech and language therapists and speech and language therapy assistants.This North West post will be based in mainstream schools and special centres/schools and may also include opportunities to work in a special school for young people with Social Emotional and Mental Health difficulties.This role is suitable for an Newly Qualified Practitioner (NQP) or a developing therapist. We have a large cohort of NQPs starting this academic year so if you are just starting out you would be able to join them and the programme of support we are offering.We offer an extensive clinical supervision package which includes an induction period, a specific NQP programme as well as a buddy system and access to clinical effectiveness groups, case study groups, termly study days, an inhouse training programme, access to formal training and regular line management and shadowing opportunities.Your main duties in the role of Speech and Language Therapist will include but will not be limited to:

  • Clinical decision making in conjunction with school staff around the level of support needed to achieve the best possible outcome for the children on your defined caseload. If you are not yet an autonomous practitioner, you will be supported to develop clinical decision-making skills by a clinical team leader
  • Working with speech and language therapy assistants, setting targets for the children and young people they are supporting and monitoring of the delivery and outcomes of their work
  • Assessment, advice and intervention for children with a range of speech, language and communication needs within your caseload. For children and young people on your caseload who are considered to have complex needs and where a joint multidisciplinary approach is essential to achieving the best outcome for these children, you will be supported by your clinical team leader
