Job Description

Principal Passive Safety EngineerLocation: WokingShift: Days40 hours per weekThe Principal Passive Safety Engineer must find and validate passive safety design solutions on certain future road vehicles, for all world regions.The Principal Passive Safety Engineer is accountable for achieving acceptable Passive Safety performance in vehicle crash tests for major vehicle programmes. They will set crash targets for the programme and then leads solutions to the designof componentry and systems which result in a vehicle that is capable of achieving legal and internal standards for occupant, pedestrian, and structural requirements in crash events. The Principal Passive Safety Engineer is then responsible for planning and executing the crash testing programme, including nomination and management of supplier and budgets, and for preparing and executing the tests.At this exciting moment in history, the number of new programmes is growing rapidly on the back of ongoing success in the marketplace. This companies vehicles are consistently lighter than their competitors and employ cutting-edge materials technology.In this context, the Passive Safety department must employ exceptional technical understanding to create innovative solutions and approaches to keep this companies road cars at the forefront of Passive Safety performance.This role reports to the Passive Safety Manager. The individual will be expected to supervise and assist other members of the team and will have line management responsibility for a Senior or Qualified Engineer.The duties and responsibilities of the Principal Passive Safety Engineer:

  • Accountable to successfully achieve the Passive Safety attribute targets including Passive Safety relevant legislation. The duration of this responsibility is from concept to vehicle sign off.
  • Single point of contact for programme leadership and meetings just for this programme.
  • Report and present to senior stakeholders, such as programme management and chief engineer, when called upon in attribute meetings or programme meetings.
  • Set the passive safety targets for this vehicle programme, with the assistance and approval of the Passive Safety Manager.
  • Guide function group conceptual design to achieve passive safety targets.
  • Perform proof-of-concept tests where required to prove out novel or risky designs.
  • Author and maintain passive safety test timing plan, and report through programme DVP.
  • Manage preparation and execution of vehicle tests.
  • Attend vehicle and rig crash tests at supplier site, with authority to represent this company.
  • Ensure all vehicles and other test material used is representative of design intent, fit for purpose and agreed with organisational stakeholders.
  • Organise workshop technician support to ensure that all vehicle re-builds, parts, and teardowns are done to high standards.
  • Work with external test partners to ensure all testing conforms to company procedures, industry best practice and global regulations.
  • Perform post-analysis of Passive Safety test data for adherence to target and advise on any departure from expected performance.
  • Raise engineering issue documentation if concerns are found during this activity.
  • Close Passive Safety issues through pro-actively leading multi-functional engineering teams, the CAE group, and other attribute team leaders to establish root cause and solutions to engineering issues.
  • Prepare gateway status slides. Presentation of the Passive Safety attribute at the programme gateway will be by the Passive Safety Manager.
The ideal experience for the Principal Passive Safety Engineer:
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors Degree (or equivalent) of minimum 2.1 classification.
  • Advantageous, but not a requirement: Masters Degree (or equivalent) with specialisation in structural, materials, simulation, or crash research.
  • Proven expertise in any of the Passive Safety technical fields.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages would be welcome.
The ideal Principal Passive Safety Engineer candidate:
  • Willing to travel to test houses and suppliers as required (estimate 25% travelling)
  • Self-motivated to deliver excellence.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Delivery focussed with demonstrable track record of on-time delivery.
  • Detail orientated with a good sense of initiative and intuition.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A willingness to take ownership of problems and a determination to see things to completion.
  • Excellent, assertive communicator with the ability to influence development.
