Job Description

Job title: Safety Category Director Salary: Highly Competitive Plus BenefitsLocation: Head Office, Wigston - LE18 2FS - with occasional travelWeekly hours: 40.25 hours per week Reporting to: Buying & Merchandising Director (Executive LT)Department: Buying & MerchandisingSafety Category Director Introduction:Safety Category Director Role:As Safety Category Director, youll lead the business unit in line with the Company Strategy, developing and executing the strategic approach to; Customer Value Proposition, Vertical Markets, Customer Size, Sales Development and Margin Enhancement.Safety has been identified as one of our Famous For categories and we are looking to rapidly accelerate our market share and business growth in this category in the next few years. But more than this, we are looking for someone who is passionate about keeping people safe at work and who understands technically how to do this in support of medium/large-sized manufacturing companies. The ideal candidate will understand the role played by services such as training and consultancy and safety products in the hierarchy of control and are excited to provide the leadership required to help us to develop a market-leading range of products and services for our customers.Safety Category Director Role Profile:Reporting to the Buying & Merchandising Director you will:

  • Be an active member of the Buying & Merchandising Team responsible for development and execution of the safety category strategy and overall performance.
  • Lead a team of over 20 people and spend of over £50m. The team includes Category Managers, Technical Sales, Corporate Clothing and Product Technical Authors.
  • Lead the development of the Safety Category Strategy with overall accountability for delivery of the business gross margin.
  • Manage the product assortment of several thousand skus including range selection,new product and product development, own label, pricing and merchandising.
  • Work alongside the commercial team to identify preferred and transactional suppliers to optimise commercial terms and ensure the right contracts are in place.
  • Develop a clear pricing strategy which balances the needs of a complex B2B customer base with B2C ecommerce competitors.
  • Work closely with the Sales Team to ensure the right product offer and support for customers, balanced with optimising prices to maximise margins.
  • Support the Sales team with technical expertise and support cost saving ideas. Help with tender submissions to demonstrate our value.
  • Lead the transfer of product knowledge and expertise for team members and customers.
  • Liaise with the Marketing, Data and Digital Teams to ensure we present our products so customers can find the right solution quickly and easily.
  • Articulate category financial performance and use data such as voice of the customer metrics.
  • Demonstrate a passion for products, as well as keeping people safe, and understand how products such as PPE and customers interact.
  • Safety Category Director Role Requirements:
  • An inspiring leader with the proven ability to drive performance and deliver significant business change at pace.
  • Proven leadership skills - the ability to lead and inspire a team and build high levels of engagement.
  • Comprehensive / broad commercial business experience with proven experience working at a senior level.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development. For example; minimum NEBOSH/NCRQ level 3 qualification, with Level 5/6 desired.
  • B2B experience and knowledge of the manufacturing world is preferred with a working knowledge of Fire Safety, DSEAR, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH and mental health/wellbeing.
  • Industry knowledge and stature, active with professional bodies such as IOSH, BOHS, IIRSM and/or trade associations such as BSIF and EEF.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely at a senior level.
  • Experience of buying and merchandising is desirable.
