Job Description

Principal Mechanical Engineer - Industrial GasesLocation: WFH + UK travelSalary: £55-65,000 + benefits, inc. car/car allowance + bonusThe National Engineering department at our Clients global organisation are looking to recruit a Principal Mechanical Engineer to apply and extend specialist technical knowledge to deliver improvements in the business goals of safety, reliability, productivity,efficiency and sustainability through solving engineering problems, authorising critical engineering tasks and the analysis and optimisation of customer and operational plant processes.Operations, Sales and Customer Engineering will be consulted regularly to identify improvement opportunities and translate them into projects which will range from development of new systems or equipment to be deployed in the market to design of complexcustomer installations to delivery of major capital projects at depots, filling plants and terminals.Particular emphasis has to be paid to maintaining the integrity of the high hazard processes that the business operates to maintain the safety of customers, employees and the public.The Role:

  • To be the technical authority for mechanical engineering, ensuring all engineering and safety aspects are properly scrutinized and signed off in accordance with company policies, procedures, and applicable external Standards or Regulations
  • To act as the change approver for modifications submitted by the business to ensure change is managed, including changes to operation and maintenance and resulting staff development needs. To ensure engineering changes are properly scrutinized in orderthat there are no deleterious safety and operational effects resulting from the change.
  • To analyse design proposals and existing installations to identify hazards and appropriate control measures to reduce process risk.
  • To interpret and apply Regulations, Standards and Guidance and develop Specifications.
  • Develop detailed technical specifications and procedures.
  • Ensure a sound evidence based approach to problem solving by applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods.
  • Design and develop engineering solutions, implement solutions and evaluate their success.
  • Identify and procure the necessary resources to address engineering tasks.
  • Employ a sound theoretical approach in enabling the introduction and exploitation of engineering technology to enhance business performance.
  • Develop and apply engineering expertise to manage change and improve business performance.
  • To engage with stakeholders to understand current challenges and enable appropriate engineering and technical support to be provided.
  • To analyse activities to identify process improvement opportunities.
  • To guide business functions to implement new equipment, standards and procedures to achieve national standardisation and best practice.
  • To coach and mentor team members and develop and lead technical training for Operations, Sales and Engineering.
  • To carry out and record Continuous Professional Development whilst extending specialist engineering knowledge in particular fields.
The Person:
  • Degree qualified, or equivalent, in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles & safety management systems
  • Experience on high hazard process plant, knowledge of process safety and COMAH Regulations
  • Leader of safety analysis techniques such as HAZOP, LOPA etc.
  • Gas industry, industrial gases, cryogenics experience
  • Expertise in relevant industry and European / British Standards
  • Ability to coach & mentor to a high standard
  • Work to high technical standards
  • Make informed, calculated decisions having assessed and mitigated risks
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to give relevant support
  • Use and share knowledge of best practice
  • Coach and mentor team members
  • Use trends, patterns analysis and lessons learned to shape future activity
  • Plan and prioritise workload in line with business priorities
  • Develop and maintain cross functional networks
  • Influence and engage others by adapting communication style
  • Ability to undertake UK travel
