Job Description

Location : BirminghamHours : Full Time -37 hours per weekOur client is looking to recruit a Democratic Support Officer to join their existing team as soon as possible on a rolling contract. They are looking for someone that can provide an efficient administrative and procedural support service to Committees andother associated meetings and to undertake other work associated with the specific meetings serviced, as required.Duties & Responsibilities

  • To fully support at all times, our client’s overall aims and objectives.
  • An ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, developing skills, and knowledge or relevant qualifications to fulfil all aspects of the job description without training and/or support.
  • To gain an understanding of the democratic processes of our client including decision-making, scrutiny arrangements, the role of members and officers in local government, Civic officers and elected member support and development.
  • To assist and work toward having particular responsibility for the development and support of one of the following areas of work within the Unit.
  • Either individually or in connection with other officers, to manage, the delivery of in-depth scrutiny reviews, including initial scoping, work programming, the provision of research and analysis and the preparation of the final review report and recommendations.
  • To develop effective and collaborative working relationships with internal stakeholders including officers, scrutiny chairs, members and the executive.
  • To contribute to the review and maintenance of protocols, constitutional arrangements and procedures related to the democratic and scrutiny function in the light of best practice and statutory requirements.
  • To have an understanding of relevant legislation and underlying concepts and principles of Democratic Services.
Required Qualifications & Experienced
  • GCSE Maths and English
  • Diploma in Democratic Knowledge (or equivalent)
  • Experience in administration tasks (production of documents, giving advice and information and interpreting procedures) is required.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and practical knowledge of committee management. Experience of supervising the completion of work. Experience of guiding and supervising project work. Demonstrable track record of strong performance in the role with responsibilityfor decision-making committees subject to formal procedures. A minimum of two years’ experience of local government committee administration. The post-holder will be expected to be able to undertake the role with minimum training.
