Job Description

Your new roleHere at Highways England we manage one of the worlds most advanced road networks. Join us as an Assistant Project Manager in the North West and build your project manager career in an extremely important road network maintenance role. In this role you will be supporting on schemes from £100k to £5million in size. You will work independently with guidance and plan and anticipate any issues with the programme.The range and type of projects that you will be supporting will be wide including resurfacing of roads, repairs to structures, upgrading junctions, street lighting and traffic signals. The role will require monitoring the progress of projects and regularly reporting to the Project Manager or Programme Delivery Manager against key mile stones. It will require the ability to work independently to gather information, undertake simple analysis of the information and then pass the findings to the Project Manager or Programme Delivery Manager to enable informed decisions to be made.You will be involved in project management of several projects at the same time, the projects are likely to be at different stages providing a continuous range of different challenges and targets to be overcome or met. You will assist the Project Managers to maintain appropriate governance for each project, ensuring that budgets are maintain for each stage and that each stage is achieved in the expected time frame.What youll be leading on

  • Supporting the development of project plans, milestones, scope, acceptable risks and priorities with key stakeholders, assisting Project Managers maintain appropriate governance to achieve successful delivery.
  • Supporting the delivery of scheme specific Communication Plans, proactively managing customers perception of the schemes in scope, to maintain or improve customer satisfaction scores; respond to HAILs and other scheme related matters as and when required.
  • Identifying develop, implement and monitor day-to-day support for the project activities including contract compliance, risk management, Health & Safety, financial management and reporting, document control, assurance and governance, to ensure adherence to Highways England standards.
  • Assisting Project Managers oversee the performance of delivery partners and provide support as appropriate, ensuring that project objectives and requirements are clearly understood, and taking appropriate remedial action where necessary.
  • Assisting Project Managers plan and control the deployment of project resources including finance, staff and third parties, and ensure that the relevant internal and external approvals processes are adhered to.
  • Supporting the identification and tracking of risks, issues, dependencies and constraints associated with the project, escalating where appropriate. Where necessary, develop, agree and implement solutions to overcome these.
  • Supporting Project Managers in the identification and delivery of efficiencies.
  • Ensuring the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
  • To be successful
  • Understanding of project management practices and controls
  • Highways experience and relevant engineering qualification
  • Managing the development of project plans and detailed stage plans in conjunction with delivery partners
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding (or be working towards) of CDM Health & Safety regulations
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to use different software
  • Evidence of managing relationships with multiple stakeholders
