Job Description

Most are at rock bottom, having to live with the regret ofwhat they have done - education gives them a focus. And hope.Education provides prisoners with an opportunity to upskill, increasing their future employment prospects which directly reduces the likelihood of reoffending. Many prisoners will arrive without having basic Maths or English skills. Prison Education ensuresall learners are put through Functional Skills Maths & English, which then puts them on the pathway to vocational learning courses, such as Carpentry, Bricklaying, Painting & Decorating, Plastering & Tiling, Cleaning, Barbering, Catering and Horticulture.Prisons have a dedicated education department, with classrooms and fully functioning workshops, where teaching and learning can take place. You will be fully supported by an experienced education department. Training and development opportunities are available.Details of this position:This position is for an SEN Manager to work at a Category B Prison in Staffordshire on a 12month rolling fixed-term contract.The post holder will be responsible for leading on support for prison residents with needs arising from neurodivergence. Developing and implementing, through close collaboration with stakeholders, a "whole system" principle is of paramount importance, withthe focus firmly on supporting individuals to achieve and progress through Education, Skill and Work pathways throughout their sentence. The Neurodiversity Support Manager (NSM) will liaise with the Learning and Skills Manager (LSM) and the education providerto ensure prisoners are supported, whether engaged with education or not, and that they continue to be supported in the community, including by the probation teams. This post will involve the line management of one SEN Tutor and will not involve teaching.This role could be for an experienced SEN Education specialist, looking to take their first step into management or looking to move into prison education.Key Responsibilities:As post-holder you will be accountable to the Prison Lot Director and play a crucial supporting role in ensuring the following:

  • Detailed knowledge of OFSTED, HMP and EIF (Education Inspection Framework) and further education and skills criteria.
  • Experience of operation in a specialist neurodiversity role.
  • Experience of within the Special Educational Needs/ Additional Learning Needs and Disabilities field.
  • Substantial teaching experience that has developed a range of strategies for developing accessible and appropriate resources to match the specific learning needs of individuals / cohorts of learner.
Essential details:Work schedule: Monday to Friday - 40 hours per weekWork times: 07:45 - 16:30Salary scale: £32,000 - £35,000Holidays: 30 days + bank holidays + up to 5 College closure daysTo be considered, suitable candidates will need to meet the following criteria:
  • A teaching qualification (Level 4 or above)
  • A SEN qualification (Level 4 or above)
  • Experience working with SEN learners for 2 years +
  • Experience working within a prison environment
  • Experience teaching within a Further education setting (desirable)
  • Experience teaching Adult Learners (desirable)
