Job Description

Whatever your age (ages 16-47) or experience, would you like the chance to complete an apprenticeship whilst earning £18,600 during your first 6 months, increasing to £23,400 until completion of technical training and then increasing again to £27,200after completion of technical trainingAdd to that 38 days paid holiday, free gym membership, free medical/dental, a non-contributary pension, subsidised accommodation for single members and families and access to the RAF’s E-Sports network….. the list is endless!Vehicle and Mechanical Equipment TechnicianAs a Vehicle and Mechanical Equipment Technician, you will keep the RAF on the move by carrying out repairs and adjustments on a range of land-based vehicles and equipment.

  • Maintain and repair a diverse fleet of specialist airfield support equipment like ground power and hydraulic supply units and dehumidifiers
  • Test and repair airfield arrestor systems that prevent aircraft runway overrun
  • Examine, maintain and repair specialist airfield support vehicles like refuelling bowsers and aircraft loading equipment
  • You could move jobs every 3-5 years as part of your through service career management’
The RAF is one of the largest providers of diverse apprenticeships in the UK. We offer these apprenticeships for this role:Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship - Engineering TechnicianEngineering Technicians take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake within the limits of their personal authority. They also need to be able to demonstrate a core set of behaviours in order to be competent in their job role,complement wider business strategy and development. This will enable them to support their long term career development.Experience Needed - None! but you do need the minimum education requirements of:GCSE grade C/4 or Scottish National 5 grade C in English language, Mathematics and an approved Science/Technology-based subject.The RAF will train you over the phases below
  • Phase one training - 10 weeks RAF Halton -You’ll complete the basic recruit training course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire
  • Phase two training Part 1 - 16 Weeks - RAF Cosford - the next step is a foundation engineering training at RAF Cosford. You will be enrolled on an Advanced Apprenticeship.
  • Phase two training Part 2 - 38 Weeks - MOD Lyneham - You will then put the theory into practice when learning how to service and repair airfield support vehicles and aircraft support equipment.
  • Additional Qualifications - ongoing - As your career progresses, we will continue to train you in new skills and you will develop fault diagnosis techniques.
Your First TourFor your first tour, you will be posted to an RAF station where you will work on a wide range of airfield support equipment and specialist vehicles in the RAF inventory.Career ProgressionAfter completing one year’s total service, you will be eligible for promotion to Senior Aircraftman, providing you pass a Trade Ability Test and Basic trade Training.Transferable SkillsThe qualifications, experience and skill-sets that you develop as a specialist Mechanical Technician are highly regarded in the wider word as they are in the RAF.Engineering Apprenticeship Requirements
  • Be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, holder of a dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth citizen from birth. This is due to the rapid and effective deployability of RAF personnel to countries that apply travel restrictionsto non-UK personnel.
  • Be between 16 and 47 (Must start training before 48th birthday).
  • Commit to minimum 3 years post specialist training.
  • Pass a Fitness test.
  • Pass the Defence Aptitude Assessment
