Job Description

A thriving partner-school in the heart of the South Wales Valleys needs an English teacher to join them immediately for a full time position which is to go permanent. The role is for at least until the end of this academic year (July), with the person covering this long-term absence taking over from one of the long-serving English Teachers who retires in July.Although the cause of absence cannot be disclosed at this stage by agency or school, you can rest assured that you will be there ongoing and guaranteed to be required for the aforementioned dates. Typically, this time of year would be an incredibly busy time in schools, and with the protocols implemented to minimise the spread of coronavirus, it has certainly been a challenging but collaborative step back into school life.IN SUMMARY

    • THE SCHOOLThe school has a very high percentage of FSM pupils and a larger number of Children classed as Looked After. Historically the school was always hailed as one of the best educational establishments in the Rhondda. However, a very tough couple of years has seen their behavioural ethos and pupils standards towards learning suffer. Under new headship, it looks like the Senior Leadership Team are more than committed to repairing the knowledge gaps and declining literate ability of many of its KS3 and 4 pupils.Although any experience teaching KS5 is desirable, the year groups who rely more heavily on structured, challenging lessons are KS3-4, particularly the year 7’s who have just transitioned into secondary school life, and of course the year 10 and 11’s who will need to achieve their predicted grades.THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATEThe schools behaviour has definitely improved and is still regarded as a ‘GOOD’ school by Estyn and fellow comprehensives in the area. You will still need to showcase excellent classroom management because as you will probably know, until you build that rapport and continuity, it can be a challenging start.There are some very gifted and talented pupils, so your knowledge and familiarity of the curriculum today is important.
