Job Description

Experienced Optical Systems Engineer required to join the R&D team. The job will involve a range of tasks related to the design, prototype assembly and test of optical, fibre-optic and photonics based sub-systems. The role offers a wide variety of activity, from involvement in initial product concepts, hardware development and customer interaction.Optical Systems Engineer Requirements:

  • A well-rounded background with good broad-based knowledge in Optics or related technologies
  • Experience within the fields of fibre-optics, photonics and electronics would be an advantage
  • Capable of working under your own steam - a self-starter, able to progress projects and trouble-shoot problems with little supervision
  • Good verbal and written communications skills related to technical approaches, work performed, test results, and findings
  • Working knowledge of basic electronics, data collection and analysis
  • Familiarity with electrical and optical test & measurement equipment
  • Familiarity with lasers and their properties and characterization is desirable
  • Hands-on approach to problem solving and troubleshooting
  • BSc (or equivalent) / PhD in Physics or Electronic/Electrical Engineering or related discipline is desirable
  • Experience performing test and measurement of fibre optic, electro-optical devices or similar
  • Familiarity with some software packages & programming tools such as: Matlab, Optics Studio, Labview, Python etc
  • Experience working in multi-discipline teams
    • Optical Systems Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Design optical and fiber-optic modules and sub-systems
  • Prototype fibre optic and optical sub-systems, build, test and critically analyse results
  • Work in NPD / NPI development programmes to commercialise new products, working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Work collaboratively with the design team on product concepts & developments
  • Interpret and work to specifications provided by customers or other departments
  • Perform environmental tests and qualification testing to industry standards such as Telcordia, MIL and/or ECSS
  • Write reports & produce presentations to present test results clearly and concisely for both internal and external customers
  • Review, assess, and create test procedures, drawings, specifications
  • Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), technical reports and other documentation associated with design and build of products
  • Liaise and work with the manufacturing engineering team to facilitate new product introduction
