Job Description

Consultant Psychiatrist in Liaison Psychiatry ServicesSomerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Psychiatrist in Liaison Psychiatry Services, this post will be part of a CORE liaison service covering Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset. The service has significantly developed and expanded over the last few years and are working towards PLAN accreditation for a 24 hour service.This is an exciting opportunity for you to play a key role in the future development of liaison psychiatry services in the largest hospital in Somerset, and one of the main hospitals in Somerset. Musgrove Park Hospital is a 500 bedded district general hospital providing a range of medical services expected for a large DGH.If successful in securing this post, you will be joining a liaison team that has significantly expanded over the last 3 years. Your workload will comprise attending daily team meetings, assessing and providing expert advice for, and in relation to, patients on the wards and in the emergency department; delivering training and supervision to the team and the wider hospital staff group, as well as participating in service delivery activities. The service will cater for all patients over 18 years old. There is an existing CAHMS liaison service which will be co-located and has good links with the existing team.This 10 PA post will have 2.5 SPA, 1.5 SPA’s for core activity and 1.0 SPA’s will be to undertake a specific role (e.g. medical appraisal, chair of a governance group, participation in service development). There will be 7.5PAs for direct clinical care. (Pro rata adaptions to be made if appointed as less than full time).Key Responsibilities:

  • Be expected to support the existing staff in the assessment, diagnosis and management of referrals for Working Age Adults presenting with mental health problems in Musgrove Park Hospital
  • Be expected to provide medical expertise and support MPH staff involved in looking after patients with functional and organic mental health problems presenting in the acute hospital. The consultant will supervise the clinical caseload of the team members and the work of any trainee doctors who may be attached to the service
  • Be expected to support the existing liaison team in deciding the most appropriate intervention for patients referred to the service
  • Be expected to develop effective liaison with the medical, surgical, nursing and allied health professionals within the acute hospital setting
  • On Call: Can opt to join the senior out-of-hours on-call rota subject to availability; duties include senior medical and RC cover for the inpatient wards and S12 MHA work both in Trust premises and in the community.Requirements:
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Mental Health Act Approved Clinician / Section 12 approval
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or CESR.
  • Evidence of competencies to be able to fulfil the role of a consultant in liaison psychiatry.
  • MRCPsych passed
  • Clinical training and experience required for gaining UK CCT or CESR including widespread and detailed experience of liaison psychiatry
  • 3 years supervised training in an appropriate ST4-6 equivalent training programme.
  • Previous experience of working at consultant level
