Job Description

Thank you for your interest in the role of Consultant in RehabilitationMedicine in SomersetWe are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic consultant with the passion to develop and deliver highquality Neurological Rehabilitation for our Somerset population and play a vital role in shaping the organisation’s culture and strategic vision and have the freedom to develop integrated services across the county.There is an opportunity, alongside the implementation of a multi-county integrated stroke delivery network (ISDN) in 2020, to develop services, in particular community neuro-rehabilitation services, and for increasing critical mass in terms of beds by exploring option of co-locating neurorehabilitation and stroke rehabilitation beds.The current service provides Level 2b specialist neuro-rehabilitation service with an aspiration to become Level 2a. This Consultant post is responsible for patients for the whole county of Somerset and some neighboring areas of Dorset.Currently the service provides:

  • In-patient service based at Somerset Neurological Rehabilitation Centre (SNRC), Dene Barton
  • Community Hospital, part of the acute Trust, in Cotford St Luke, a small village on outskirts of Taunton.
  • Ten bedded unit providing specialist neurorehabilitation for people in Somerset withacquired brain injury, other neurological conditions like Guillain-Barre Syndrome andMultiple Sclerosis and some spinal cord injuries which may not need Level 1/2a spinal cord service.
  • Out-patient service consists of clinics at Dene Barton, Musgrove, South Petherton, Yeovil and Bridgwater, including twice a month Botulinum Toxin injection clinics, monthly head injury clinic, monthly spasticity clinic, monthly transitional clinic, besides usual neurorehabilitation clinics.
  • Annual joint multidisciplinary transitional clinic with consultant paediatrician.
  • Injection clinics supported by 2 experienced injectors including Consultant Neurophysiotherapist and Senior specialist neuro-physiotherapist.
  • Spasticity clinic supported by Consultant Neuro-physiotherapist.
  • Head injury clinic supported by Neuro-occupational therapist, when available.
  • Referrals for in-patient service received mainly from Musgrove, and also from otherhospitals in the county, including Yeovil and Bath. GP referrals received from the whole county for out-patient services.

  • Other activities: Good opportunities to participate in CME/CPD activities. SNRC in-house monthly teaching programme, Musgrove weekly medical grand round, attending CME/CPDapproved regional/national conferences, including BSRM conferences. Opportunities topresent.
  • Teaching/training of SNRC Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctor.
  • Participation in Audit.
  • Active links with Bristol Major Trauma Network service and implementation of rehabilitation prescriptions.
  • Option of referring complex out-patient cases to the Rosa Burden Centre in Bristol for neuropsychology/neuro-psychiatry review.
  • Opportunity to develop links with other neuro-rehabilitation units in the South-West located in Exeter, Truro and Plymouth.
