Job Description

Designplan is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fagerhult Lighting, one of Europes leading lighting companies. With its head office and manufacturing operations located in Surrey, UK, Designplan is recognized as an industry leader specializing in the design,manufacture and supply of robust, highly efficient lighting products.We design for applications that require luminaires which are robustly constructed, reliable and are easy to install and maintain. Our market sectors include community and public, custodial, secure healthcare and transport.The RoleThe Primary Shop contains automated, semi-automated and manual processes including press brakes, punch presses, CNC machine centres, large powder coat paint plant, spot welding, Mig and Tig manual welding. The ideal candidate should have knowledge and experiencewith some of these machines and be comfortable gaining experience across the department.The Manager is responsible for the day to day people management of skilled & semi-skilled workers, including performance appraisals, identifying training requirements, and managing temporary worker levels.The Manager is responsible for the management, coordination, scheduling, prioritizing & monitoring of production requirements and activities to ensure all internal & external customer requirements are met, as well as developing and implementing plans tomeet production targets.Chargehands & the Manager are responsible for managing the flow of work through the Primary Shop ensuring this is done efficiently whilst minimizing down time and waste. Understanding of push & pull manufacturing to ensure flow of work meets capacity, coupledwith ensuring employee capacity are able to meet the demands.The Manager is responsible for ensuring lean principles are embedded in the department and providing continuous improvement solutions, including monitoring 5s procedures and processes, as well as utilising visual management in the department.The Responsibilities

  • Ensuring production efficiencies are communicated throughout the team and that they are met in line with staffing levels available.
  • Ensuring staffing levels are reviewed periodically and action is taken to meet the forward production plan.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively with Supervisor and Chargehands to ensure they are aware of production priorities and the schedule is being adhered to, in conjunction with the Production & Logistics Manager.
  • Ensuring quality standards are communicated throughout the team and are adhered to at all times.
  • Ensuring all health & safety requirements are communicated and adhered to.
  • Managing day to day personnel issues within the department and ensuring they are resolved in a timely manner. These may include having difficult conversations, leading formal processes, recruitment, managing the departments annual leave in line with operationalrequirements, and performance appraisals.
  • Communicating effectively and coordinating with relevant parties on various initiatives.
  • General departmental administration & department budget management.
  • Maintaining an inventory of raw materials and finished products.
  • Purchasing needed inventory and maintaining BOM status.
Ideal CandidateThe Primary Shop features brake machines / folding machines, punch press, CNC machines, and welding. The ideal candidate should have knowledge and experience with some of these machines and be comfortable gaining experience across the department. Someonewith a solid metal works background would be ideal for this role.
  • Be experienced in people management and leading a team who can evaluate situations & make decisions.
  • Have experience in lean manufacturing and will embrace lean principles.
  • Have understanding of production planning & scheduling.
  • Understand ERP / MRP systems and have confidence in their ability to utilise our system (Syteline) effectively.
  • Work in a collaborative manner with other Factory Managers.
  • Be confident in their ability to manage the general administration of the department, including use of Office 365.
  • Be a strong team player with the ability to work with all levels across the business.
  • Have an understanding of metal fabrication.
  • Be organized and methodical in their approach. Be motivated, disciplined, flexible and have the ability to use their own initiative.
