Job Description

We are looking for a Materials Degree Apprentice to join our AMRICC team. Working Monday to Friday, you will be based in Stoke on Trent. Benefits include: 25 days holiday (plus public holidays)Flexible working arrangements (variable start and end times) Private medical cover (including a cash plan to pay most excesses, and the option to enrol other family members)Role PurposeAMRICC seeks candidates to fill the position of Apprentice Materials Technician for its new industrial innovation and commercialisation facility.In the context of this position, you will be training to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to acquire a Degree Apprenticeship in Material Science with the University of Derby. As an apprentice employee, you will be spending 80% of your time withus making a significant and positive contribution to our work. The remaining 20% of your time will be spent on campus or in self-directed study, with the University of Derby.Accountabilities:Under the supervision of a technician or scientist you will be trained to undertake the following accountabilities of the role of a technician:

  • Conduct day to day laboratory and pilot plant activities including:
  • Measurement and recording of data
  • Oversight of safe and efficient operation of experimental equipment
  • Carry out routine tasks accurately
  • Prepare specimens and samples
  • Maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment
  • Undertake the proper handling of chemicals, feedstocks and experimental product materials through various processing steps carried out in the laboratory and pilot plant, including mixing, blending, milling, classifying, various forming operations, thermalprocessing using a variety of kilns and furnaces, chemical treatments.
  • Undertake material production and processing trials at laboratory and pilot scale
  • Record, collate and interpret experimental data
  • Maintain paper and digital records and report results of experimental trials
  • Write brief reports summarising the experimental testing results.
  • Participate fully in H&S activities including development of safe operating procedures, site safety audits, hazard assessments and all required safety reporting responsibilities.
  • Investigate and resolve technical and safety issues that may arise with the equipment working with internal and external personnel
  • Be able to work with decreasing supervision to conduct daily experimental work
Qualifications:
  • 2 A Levels in Maths at grade B or above, plus grade B or above in Chemistry, Physics or Engineering
  • Or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in an engineering-related subject (including further Maths) at DDM (obtained or predicted)
  • 5 GCSEs, including Maths at grade B/6, English Language at Grade B/5, Physics or Chemistry at grade B/6 plus 2 others at grade A-C in any subject.
