UK Biobank have an exciting opportunity for a Platform Technical Lead to join their growing team based in Stockport, Manchester.Job Title: Platform Technical LeadLocation: Stockport, ManchesterSalary: Competitive + BenefitsJob Type: Permanent – Full TimeWe are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motived IT Technical Lead to bring governance, technical assurance and strategic oversight to the complex and critical IT services that maintain and deliver the UK Biobank petabyte scale health-related data resource.Platform Technical Lead - The Role:Working collaboratively with third-party providers of our Managed Informatics Platform and research data storage, you will provide technical assurance for the implementation of these and other related services; oversee the design, development, and deployment of the necessary integration services and solutions. These services will allow the 15,000 registered researchers from 85 countries with us to access and work with our health-related data resource: a resource that will grow to 10-15 petabytes as we incorporate the outputs of a programme to genome sequence all 500,000 UK Biobank participants. The strategy and roadmap for these third-party services and their integration with UK Biobank systems will be for you to own, develop and manage.You will establish and lead a UK Biobank Technical Design Authority, working with technical leads for UK Biobank systems, developing and implementing appropriate architecture processes, documentation, and governance. You will engage with projects during initiation to ensure technical solutions are established in line with strategy and roadmap, ensuring downstream data generation can be seamlessly incorporated into the data resource. Your experience with data at scale will ensure robust and efficient solutions are in place for data ingestion, storage, access and release through UK Biobank internal systems and the Managed Informatics Platform.As the Platform Technical Lead, you will provide strategic capacity planning, technical oversight of in-house developed solutions, assessing the technical risks associated with internal solutions and third party services and data feeds.Platform Technical Lead - You:Essential- Demonstrable experience of working as a Technical Architect/Solution Architect/TDA to implement architecture processes and governance in a multi-supplier vendor environment- Experience of public cloud service offerings, especially IaaS / PaaS- Experience of integrating third party and in house developed services- Experience with ETL tooling and Master Data Management- Familiarity of working with health-related data- An understanding of current best practices regarding system security, including ISO27001 certification and GDPR- Experience of working with a range of hardware and software technologies including Linux- Experience of UX design and familiarity with approaches such as User Centred Design- The ability to work with minimal direction when making technical decisions, but to do so within a team when needed using your excellent verbal and written communication skills to lead, influence and where required negotiate with othersDesirable- Experience of working with UK healthcare data- Experience of working in a Life Sciences environment- An advanced degree in a relevant subjectPlatform Technical Lead - Why Join Us:UK Biobank is a world leading health-related data resource: collecting and making available a wide range of data about our cohort of 500,000 participants to allow industry and academic scientists to conduct research that will improve the health of future generations.A not- for-profit charity, we recruited participants aged 40 to 69 years old between 2006 and 2010, with the commitment of following this cohort for 30 years. Participants provided physical measures, biological samples, and completed questionnaires.The data is regularly enhanced with healthcare data linked from NHS services. Enhancement projects are carried out generate additional large and varied datasets, for example: DICOM images from MR & DEXA scans, accelerometer data, and more recently whole exome and whole genome sequence data for all participants.Sequence data at this scale is unprecedented and requires innovative technological solutions.
