Job Description

Wellcomes Mental Health team has a long-term remit to fund research that leads to an increased ability to act earlier and to use personalised interventions to prevent people from being held back by mental health problems. Our focus is on depression, anxietyand psychosis in young people under 30. We believe that mental health is a tangle of biological, psychological and social factors. We will fund research that brings to bear insights from biology, psychology, social science and more to understand what causesand what cures mental health problems.We are looking to recruit a Senior Research Manager to sit within the Lived Experience team, whos remit is to ensure that the expertise and perspectives of people with lived experience of mental health problems informand shape the mental health science research agenda; to find the best ways to take account of the expertise and insights of people with lived experience of mental health problems; and developing best models of inclusion and involvement of those most affectedby mental health problems within the wider mental health science community. This includes working closely with our existing team of lived experience consultants from around the world and developing networks further.You will need to have significant expertisein relation to lived experience in mental health science and research and within large, complex organisations. Significant expertise in at least one specialist area of mental health science, broadly defined, and of the wider mental health science community.Expertise need not be limited to psychology, psychiatry or neuroscience: those with relevant expertise in a range of fields from molecular biology to social science will be considered.This role does not have line management responsibilities, but you will needexperience in project management.You will:Contribute to the effective delivery of funding decisions, providing critical scientific assessment of applications, participating in decision-making reviews and making clear recommendations to senior management. Ensurea breadth and depth of knowledge of your area and the wider research and funding landscape and apply this to the review and development of Mental Health Research Programme activities, identifying suitable routes for the development and delivery of new activitiesand sharing knowledge and expertise to contribute to the work Research Programmes and throughout Wellcome. Ensure decision making and review processes are robust, fair and in line with Wellcomes strategy, and ensure the highest quality of external adviceis identified to support it. Identify and manage larger projects on your own, acting as the main point of contact, liaising with external stakeholders or partners for the ongoing management and conclusion of major initiatives. Devise and implement strategicworkplans to deliver the agreed outcomes for a strategic area of work (or multifaceted programmes of work) relevant to Mental Health . Matrix management of larger projects within Mental Health and with other line functions to deliver on projects and achievethe outcomes of their strategic area. Manage workload to meet deadlines and deliver timely, high quality self-contained outputs and provide regular high-level updates to senior management, seeking advice and feedback as appropriate. Use deep understandingof the Mental Health stakeholders to identify establish and maintain key relationships, understanding their needs and working in partnership. Effectively use knowledge and expertise to inform and influence internal and external networks to independently seekadvice and input from experts as needed. Ensure Wellcome has a good understanding of the nature of our funding portfolio (covering research progress, research culture (locally and at host) and D&I , an active relationship with applicants and staff on grantsso that all funded researchers feel a greater sense of partnership with Wellcome. Organise and drive multidisciplinary internal and external meetings and project teams, to deliver on strategic activities. Clearly communicate the work and funding of the MentalHealth to internal and external audiences. Regularly report to senior leadership on progress and delivery towards outcomes. Use knowledge and expertise to be a respected and authoritative voice outside Wellcome. Skills and Experience: Able to demonstrate abreadth of research expertise in a relevant field through relevant work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting. Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communitiesSignificant experience in working in relevant field Ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to individuals and groups from a range of different background and different seniority levels. Excellent organisationalskills. Demonstrated ability to manage a fluctuating, heavy, workload and competing priorities Articulate with strong verbal communication skills. Adept at delivering presentations Evidence of excellent writing skills with ability to synthesise informationconveying key points clearly and concisely IT literate with experience of using database and other computerised systems, including Microsoft Office products Experience of shaping and delivering research or science related programmes of work Experience/knowledgeof managing large projects in an academic or industry setting.
