Job Description

Wellcomes Mental Health team has a long-term remit to fund research that leads to an increased ability to act earlier and to use personalised interventions to prevent people from being held back by mental health problems. Our focus is on depression, anxietyand psychosis in young people under 30. We believe that mental health is a tangle of biological, psychological and social factors. We will fund research that brings to bear insights from biology, psychology, social science and more to understand what causesand what cures mental health problems.We are looking to recruit a Research Manager to sit within the Lived Experience team, whos remit is to ensure that the expertise and perspectives of people with lived experience of mental health problems inform and shapethe mental health science research agenda; to find the best ways to take account of the expertise and insights of people with lived experience of mental health problems; and developing best models of inclusion and involvement of those most affected by mentalhealth problems within the wider mental health science community. This includes working closely with our existing team of lived experience consultants from around the world and developing networks further.You will need to have expertise in relation to livedexperience involvement in mental health science and in a specialist area of mental health science, broadly defined. Expertise need not be limited to psychology, psychiatry or neuroscience: those with relevant expertise in a range of fields from molecular biologyto social science will be considered.This role does not have line management responsibilities but you will need experience in project management.You will:Contribute to the effective delivery of work that may range from convening, to making funding decisionsand producing reports/reviews- providing specific technical expertise as relevant. Maintain a thorough understanding of the breadth of work of the Mental Health, sharing knowledge and expertise to contribute to the work Research Programmes and throughout Wellcome.Ensure Wellcome has a good understanding of the nature of our funding portfolio, covering research progress, research culture (locally and at host) and D&I, and an active relationship with applicants and staff on grants so all funded researchers feel a greatersense of partnership with Wellcome. Participate in the selection of external advisors to support decision-making for [challenge area/ discovery research], ensuring external advice is of the highest quality. Establish and maintain effective relationships witha wide range of external stakeholders, including other funders, partner organisations, and members of the research community and to be able to clearly communicate the work of Mental Health and its funding initiatives to internal and external audiences. Contributeto the initiation, ongoing management and conclusion of Mental Health major initiatives and awards acting as the main point of contact for defined projects, liaising with external stakeholders or partners on straightforward issues. Matrix management of projectswithin Mental Health and alongside other line functions to deliver on projects and achieve the outcomes of their strategic area. Manage workload to meet deadlines and deliver timely, high quality self-contained outputs, with limited support. Regularly monitorproject team activity against milestones and objectives and report to senior leadership on progress and delivery of specific projects. Use internal and external networks to independently seek advice and input from experts as needed. Communicate Wellcomesposition accurately and can support with key arguments and evidence. Skills and Experience: Able to demonstrate a breadth of research expertise in a relevant field through relevant work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting.Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communities Ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to individuals and groups from a range of different backgroundand different seniority levels. Excellent organisational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a fluctuating, heavy, workload and competing priorities Articulate with strong verbal communication skills. Adept at delivering presentations Well-developed writingskills with ability to synthesise information conveying key points clearly and concisely IT literate with experience of using database and other computerised systems, including Microsoft Office products Experience/knowledge of managing projects in an academicor industry setting.
