Job Description

Locum SEN LawyerRemote Workingup to £55 per hour UmbrellaThames Valley Venn Groups specialist legal team are pleased to be recruiting for a Locum SEN Lawyer to join an excellent Local Authority in the Thames Valley. This assignment will be for an initial period of at least 3 months and is subject to possible extension thereafter.The role will be performed on an all remote basis and the Authority are ideally seeking someone to take on the position on a full-time basis, however candidates with part-time availability possessing relevant experience will be considered.The ideal candidate will be a Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive with Local Government experience and a solid understanding of a wide range of Education and SEND matters. Duties may include:

  • Managing own casework and providing advice and assistance on appeals to the SEN Tribunal for challenges against EHCPs, Extended Appeals, Refusal to Assess and Refusal to Issue
  • Assisting and advising on appeals to the Upper Tier Tribunal on SEN matters
  • Advising officers, senior managers and Director of Education on review of and drafting of policies, Cabinet Reports
  • Advising and assisting on Judicial Reviews, drafting responses to Pre-action protocol letters, collating evidence, drafting witness statements, drafting grounds of response with Counsel, instructing Counsel, coordinating conferences and preparation forthe oral hearing in some cases
  • Advising on all LGO complaints, drafting responses, reviewing and scrutinising of LGO Reports, drafting of public notices and press statements
  • Advising schools on all school related issues - parental complaints, admissions, exclusions, nuisance and banning notices
  • Advising Governing Bodies of schools and clerking appeals and meetings
  • Advising officers and senior managers on EQCIAs and assisting with the drafting of the assessments
  • Advising on and drafting responses to complaints to the Secretary of State for Education under the Children and Families Act 2014
  • Delivering training on Judicial Reviews, First Tier Tribunal appeals and Annual Reviews
