Job Description

NationwideFull-timeThe Army is more than just combat; it’s a place to do something that really matters. As an Ammunition Technician, you’ll learn to inspect, repair, store and destroy everything from rifle ammunition to guided weapons. You will work with Army Units and UK security services, deploying bomb disposal robots.Progression to a Bomb Disposal Operator (with extra pay) is also possible. You’ll be given responsibility early in your career as you’ll become a Lance Corporal immediately after completing your training and your career could involve work in fields such as Weapons Technical Intelligence, Ammunition Stockpile Management and Improvised Explosives Device Disposal.Ammunition Technicians are highly sought after by the commercial energetics industry and by organisations running training in explosives and bomb disposal.WORLD-CLASS TRAININGJoin us and you’ll start by learning the soldiering skills common to every member of the British Army, like outdoor survival and the safe handling of weapons. Then you’ll learn the specialist skills that will make you an expert in your role. Over your training period, you’ll earn your C+E Driving License alongside learning about the Royal Logistic Corps. After this, you will work alongside Ammunition Technicians who will mentor you until your Specialist Trade Training begins. You will then complete your 29-week Class 2 Ammunition Technician course which is split between the Defence Academy in Shrivenham and the Defence EOD Munitions and Search Training Regiment in Kineton. You’ll learn how to inspect, test, move, store and destroy every type of ammunition and explosive.GAIN QUALIFICATIONSThe Army can help you gain a range of qualifications. These could include:

  • Driving Licences: Category B and C+E.
  • Level 4 Apprenticeship in Ordnance Munitions & Explosives.
  • The opportunity to study for an MSc in Explosives Ordnance Engineering (on a part-time basis).
  • A proven track record in the field that can gain the title of Engineering Technician (Eng Tech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

From the moment you begin your training youll get all the support and encouragement you need to make a success of your career. Work hard and youll soon get promoted, which means more responsibility and extra pay. Become an Ammunition Technician and you’ll:- Earn a starting salary of around £15,900 during Basic Training which will rise to £20,000 after completing 26 weeks’ training or after completing your Initial Trade Training, if less than 26 weeks- You can earn extra pay once you reach the rank of Sergeant and you are qualified to conduct Bomb Disposal duties.- Receive subsidised accommodation and facilities, increasing your disposable income- Receive free medical and dental health cover- Have the continuous access promotional opportunity and to continually progress your career- Be sponsored to earn valuable civilian-recognised qualifications- Take part in Adventurous Training and be able to play your favourite sports.BELONG TO SOMETHING THAT MATTERSYou should be:
  • Regular Army age: 16.6 - 35.6 years
  • Army Reserve age: 17.9 - 49.11 years
  • Qualifications you’ll need:No formal qualifications required.Fitness requirements:
  • Mid-thigh pull of 46kg
  • Medicine ball throw of 2.9m
  • 2km run in 11min 15 sec (11 min 30 sec for Junior Entry)
