Job Description

The Translational Biomarkers and Bioanalysis group is positioned within the function of Development Sciences, which as a department provides strategy and support in integrated pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and DMPK, bioanalysis, immunogenicity, safety, pathology, and regulatory activities throughout the lifespan of projects, from target identification through to clinical studies.The Translational Biomarkers and Bioanalysis group (TB&B) operate and collaborate closely with colleagues in Development Sciences and across the organization to support bioanalysis and biomarker activities.Translational Biomarkers and Bioanalysis is looking for a high caliber, lab-based Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Scientist to develop and validate IHC Biomarker assays.The required candidate should have a strong scientific background, good written and verbal communication skills and be highly self-motivated with a proven ability to multi-task effectively and adapt to meet the demands of a fast-paced matrix-team environment.Role and Responsibilities:

  • You will develop IHC/histology biomarker assays in the laboratory for tissue samples and ensure delivery of high-quality fit-for-purpose assays
  • Develop the clinical biomarker IHC assay and support technical transfer to Contract Research Organizations (CRO) to ensure successful validation in the agreed timelines.
  • Work within the Bioanalytical area to optimize experimental design, troubleshoot technical challenges, conduct sample analysis, data interpretation and report generation
  • Assess novel biomarkers to ensure right dose, right molecule, and right patient population within future clinical trials.
  • Where appropriate, characterise antibodies, conduct reagent evaluation, and perform reagent qualification/tissue preparation optimization assessments
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations
  • Maintain an awareness of new / emerging techniques and tools relevant to the field.
  • Represent and align with the objectives of Development Sciences internally and externally in matters relevant to biomarkers and bioanalysis
  • Skills and Experience
  • Candidates should have a BSc or higher academic qualification in a biological discipline with good theoretical understanding of the principals of immunohistochemistry and its application to biomarker analysis in clinical studies.
  • Practical experience in general histology methods, immunohistochemistry and In situ hybridisation, with both chromogenic and ideally fluorescence methodology. Prior experience with autostainers an advantage.
  • Practical experience in brightfield and fluorescent microscopy, and related imaging techniques. Prior experience in whole-slide scanning, analysis and digital image analysis would be an advantage.
  • Practical experience of the complete workflow for tissue sample preparation, from sample collection to tissue processing through to slide cutting and staining.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail essential, alongside enthusiasm to develop clear workflows and traceable reporting.
  • Clear grasp of context of use (linking assay requirements to the usage of the data generated)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and flexibly in a dynamic laboratory environment to meet project timelines with minimal supervision
  • An ability to work in a matrix team and communicate clearly to internal colleagues, project scientists and other internal stakeholders, able to discuss ideas, provide constructive challenge and feedback.

  • Experience of working with human tissue under the directives of the Human Tissue Act (HTA).
  • Experience of working in a pharmaceutical drug discovery and development environment.
  • Experience of working with electronic lab notebooks
  • Good working knowledge of using spreadsheets and databases.
  • Knowledge of quantitative image analysis and whole slide scanning
