Job Description

H9 Technical Recruitment are hiring for an Environmental Manager to work at our clients Energy from Waste plant in the Sittingbourne area to be responsible for assisting the SHEQ Senior Management Team and Plant Manager in all aspects of environmental compliancedutiesOverviewYou will provide professional advice in the development, implementation and monitoring of policies and procedures and maintain a compliance register (including legislation, UK Government policy and Local Authority requirements) and liaise with third partiesregarding compliance with project and other requirements.Role & Responsibilities:

  • Manage compliance of the Environmental Management System, including, but not limited to, conducting internal audits, external facility audits, developing and reviewing policies, procedures and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure ISO accreditation is achieved and maintained.
  • Manage the delivery and reporting of the environmental monitoring programme for the EfW facility, ensuring all regulatory and management reports are produced as required under the Environmental Permit and other regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Prepares site monthly, quarterly, and annual Environmental/ESG and KPI reporting to the SHEQ Senior Management team ensuring all targets are recorded, monitored, and achieved within regulated timescales.
  • Responsible for the compliance of all permit application specifications, including the landscape and biodiversity management plans.
  • Ensure that all sampling and monitoring is conducted in accordance with the Environmental Permit, planning and discharge consents. This will include but is not limited to; IBA, APCr, noise, odour, dust, bioaerosols, vibration, soil, vegetation, ecologyand waters (e.g. borehole, boiler, steam, surface or drainage).
  • Monitors actions arising from any risk assessments and ensures improvement in those areas of non- compliance.
  • Ensures all statutory inspections and examinations are carried out on time and in accordance with required standards and codes of practice. Maintains records for all statutory inspections, licenses and consents.
  • Provides advice and guidance on statutory compliance issues, keeping abreast of forthcoming and proposed legislative changes and assisting management with any actions necessary to comply with statutory requirement changes.
  • Produce, manage and continually review the environmental and compliance matrix for the facility.
  • Responsible for ensuring all environmental regulatory requirements and monitoring routines for the facility are met, which will include but is not limited to; ESA protocol for IBA, QAL2, QAL3 & AST for CEMS, extractive monitoring and water discharges offsite.
  • Manage specialist contractors and advise Operations Staff to ensure regular monitoring of the boiler water and steam chemistry to ensure optimum corrosion performance.
  • Liaise with and manage third-party contractors, as required, for the delivery of the environmental monitoring programme (e.g., pest control, stack emission testing, etc).
  • Lead on regulatory authority issues, by providing regulatory correspondence, data, reports and other compliance-related information.
  • Work collaboratively as one team with the SHEQ division, Operations and Maintenance teams to ensure that the monitoring infrastructure is maintained in good order and that issues affecting environmental compliance are resolved promptly.
  • Take ownership of the monitoring and reporting of any environmental or maintenance activity that impacts upon plant availability and reliability to the SHEQ and site Management team.
  • Generate contract scope of works for environment-related service contracts and contribute to contract performance reviews with procurement and management staff.
  • Manage ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) related projects as appropriate.
  • Use the Company Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) in accordance with company standards and procedures.
  • Review and analyse emissions data daily to identify trends and any potential defects within the plant.
  • Complete duty of care routine checks, site inspections and audits to ensure the facility meets its statutory obligations.
  • Completes the Corporate and Plant Training Programs within the timeframe prescribed.
  • Takes ownership of the process to develop and deliver effective training and emergency preparedness plans for all site teams to ensure awareness, competency and compliance.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • BSc or equivalent, preferably in an Environmental subject, or extensive experience gained in a regulatory / supervisory role.
  • Degree educated in a relevant science subject or equivalent (preferably Environmental or Chemistry based).
  • Knowledge of boiler water chemistry and treatment regimes is desirable
  • Professional memberships and certifications (or working towards them) from professional bodies such as CIWM, WAMITAB or IEMA.
  • IOSH Managing Safely general certificate
  • Experience with computerised emissions monitoring and reporting systems
  • Knowledge of BS EN: 14181 and BS EN: 15267 relating to air emissions testing and CEMS.
  • Practical knowledge of waste treatment, recycling and disposal operations.
  • Practical knowledge of Environmental Permitting regime and legislation.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems, ISO14001:2015.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory framework (WM3) controlling the waste management industry.
  • Working knowledge of the health, safety and environmental impacts of waste management.
  • Practical experience of the interpretation and reporting of environmental data.
