Job Description

I am currently recruiting for a permit Technician to work at my client, a leading public sector organisation based in Sheffield centre.Your role will be to assess and process day to day highways permit applications.Duties:

  • Contribute to delivering the Councils Vision for Excellent Transport in Sheffield.
  • Responsible for assisting the Principal Permit Engineer in the day to day management of the Highway Permits process ensuring that the streetworks register system is available at all times during the working day
  • To advise on the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) and the Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA)
  • To assist in overseeing all aspects of work by utility companies on the public highway and to ensure that this process runs smoothly and all aspects of the NRSWA are prosecuted fully.
  • To ensure that all relevant sections of the TMA are fully prosecuted.
  • To assist the Highway Network Manager and Principal Permit Engineer in ensuring that all Council works to the Highways are co-ordinated with works by Utility companies to reduce disruption and that Council policies and its regulatory framework is applied.
  • To ensure that all data regarding Utility Company works is collected and suitably recorded and available to those who need to consider it.
  • To assist the Highway Network Manager and Principal Permit Engineer in limiting the disruption caused by Utility Companies to the Highways Network.
  • To assist in the process of ensuring that all outgoing noticing are managed effectively by the team and that all defect notifications and comments are sent to utility companies by means of the recognised ETON system
  • Identify cases of sites that have contravened NRSWA or TMA and report these instances to the Principal Permit Engineer
  • To assist in the preparation of reports and briefing notes for the Traffic Manager and Principal Permit Engineer as required.
  • Prepare Traffic Regulation Orders and Notices in connection with the temporary closure of Public Highway.
To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and experience:
  • Understanding of customer care and citizen focussed services
  • IT literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite of programmes including EXCEL and Word
  • Good standard of communication skills: written and oral.
  • Awareness of office health and safety
  • Ability to work with engineering drawings
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Relevant highway and IT related experience
  • Ability to handle a variety of tasks in a given programme and work to tight timescales
  • Ability to work both in the office and on site, including on construction sites.
