Job Description

Adept are working with a steel stockholder based in Sheffield, who are currently seeking a Operations Director to join the team to become key member of the Board of Directors, who will develop strategy, drive operational excellence, and champion continuousimprovement projects. Lead the team, increase capability, and capacity of the Operations area of the business to support increase profit. Have responsibility for the maintenance and security of the site.*Monday to Friday*Key Responsibilties:

  • Work closely with the board of Directors and Management team to devise strategies to support business growth and operational excellence.
  • Monitor operational metrics, with functional team leaders to meet the company’s goals. Maintaining the status of visible metrics, improvement plans, and timescales.
  • Working with the Finance function of the Company to ensure systems and monitoring is in-place to capture job costings. Conduct variance analysis and ensure improvement plans are embedded to support accurate costing at every level of the operational process.As part of driving the business to increase profits.
  • Manage the effectiveness of staff. Provide on-going coaching, mentoring and support. Conduct appraisals and regular one-to-one reviews with direct reports and lead departmental wide communication sessions.
  • Responsibility for creating and submitting departmental annual budget proposals and monthly project cost forecasts.
  • The main lead representing the Operations Department for company wide cross functional continuous improvement projects.
  • Scope, deploy and monitor continuous improvement projects within the Operations department. This will include championing projects to reduce costs and reporting key cost avoidance and opportunities to increase efficiencies to the Board of Directors.
  • Negotiate with suppliers (in conjunction with the Purchasing Manager when required) for consumables and services which fall in the areas of Operations and Site Management.
  • Ensure the site is secure and maintained to a high standard.
  • Ensuring the company’s HSE standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Any reasonable task set by the Managing Director.
Skills and Experience:
  • To degree level or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of two-years’ experience on the board of directors in an Operational role in an Engineering company.
  • Strong engineering and manufacturing background.
  • Proven experience of running a successful result driven machine shop. The ability to maximise assets, run automation cells to their full potential and actively look for opportunities to automate processes and digitalise the operational functions.
  • Management of £1m+ departmental budgets including and understanding of how to create and maintain control and where necessary analyse, investigate, and resolve variances.
  • Experience of building capital investment justifications for purchases of £300k+ ready for board appraisal.
  • Proven experience and understanding of the importance of stock control for raw materials, WIP and finished goods.
  • Strong goal-oriented person with excellent organisational skills and communication skills across all levels.
  • Experience of managing, mentoring, and coaching a large team.
  • Successfully lead projects across multiple departments.
  • Experience of managing business system changes in the Operational area. For example, an up-grade or implementation of an ERP system.
  • The ability and track record in using continuous improvement methods to drive change and improve operational metrics.
  • Responsible for and maintaining a manufacturing site to a high standard in a previous role.
  • Excellent understanding of quality standards and health & safety regulations.
  • Able to demonstrate good presentation and networking skills.
