Job Description

If yes, then we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Legal Services department as a Senior Lawyer. You will be responsible for leading a specific legal team that provides high quality, cost effective and timely legal advice and representation to the council and its external partners. You will also be involved in the most complex, difficult or high profilework, projects and programmes within your area of expertise.As a Senior Lawyer, you will:
  • Provide line management, performance and supervision to staff within your team
  • Manage the operational delivery of legal services that support the council’s aims and objectives
  • Deal with or provide operational leadership on complex, difficult or high profile work within your team
  • Act under the direction and supervision of the relevant Legal Service Manager
  • Comply with the council’s policies, procedures and expectations of a manager
  • Implement continuous service improvement, innovation and efficiencies within your team and together with colleagues across the Service
  • Work collegiately with other Senior Lawyer Managers under the direction of Service Managers
  • Provide advice and representation at court, committees, boards and panels as appropriate
  • Deputise for Service Managers as required
  • Undertake any other related duties and responsibilities as they may arise
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • Experience of or ability to manage a specific legal team in a complex public sector environment
  • Understanding and experience of appropriate legal / statutory services and promoting democracy
  • Experience of or ability to manage and supervise a team of Lawyers, Professional Officers and Assistant Professional Officers complying with Council expectations for line managers
  • Understanding of legal case management systems and process knowledge, plus other relevant IT skills including word, excel, PowerPoint or equivalents and other systems
  • Evidence of continuing professional and managerial development
  • Ability to assess, manage and mitigate legal risk in a specific legal team
  • Collaborative leadership in a specific legal team
  • Excellent communication skills across all mediums
