Job Description

Essentials:

  • A DBS check is required for the role
  • This role requires someone physically fit due to being on their feet all day. On average a Hospital Porter will walk 3 to 4 miles per day in this role
  • There is medium to heavy lifting involved with the role
  • There will be contact with contact with COVID patients with this role
  • There could be occasional transfer deceased patients.
Hospital PorterLocation: SheffieldTravelling: The successful candidate will need to work across two sites both in Sheffield as and when requiredParking: Free Onsite parking but limitedJob Type: TemporaryDuration of booking: There are various role expected to be for 1 month, 2 months and 5 monthsProposed start date: ASAPSector: HealthcareBase: HospitalBand: 2Pay Rates: £10.50 paye inclusive of holiday payWorking Days and Hours: 37.5 hours per weekMonday to Friday working the following shifts on a rota basis:8am to 4pm8.30am to 4.30pm9am to 5pm12pm to 8pmOutline of the role: To work as part of the hospital portering team to assist the Portering Supervisor and Head of Portering in providing an efficient and high quality portering service to all areas within the Radiology department. To project a positive image of the departmentand Trust to patients, staff and visitors. To communicate effectively with all staff to ensure that any problems are dealt with effectively.Duties include:
  • To transfer patients to and from department and other departments as required by the appropriate method, including bed, chair, or trolley.
  • To transfer notes, clinical samples etc. as required.
  • To participate in moving and handling of patients, including using hoists and lateral transfers.
  • To transfer patients oxygen supply from fixed supply to portable cylinders in line with Trust policy
  • To change medical gas cylinders as required
  • To notify the Chargehand Porter or deputy on anything they consider to be of a poor standard.
  • To ensure that all appropriate documentation is complete and accurate and adheres to the General Data Protection Regulations. This includes computer data entry if appropriate.
  • To ensure that patient movement equipment is cleaned regularly and as and when required in line with infection control policy.
  • To act under instruction from clinical staff in the event of a cardiac arrest or other emergencies eg fire alarm.
  • To occasionally transfer deceased patients.
  • To identify deteriorating patients and advise nursing and clinical staff as appropriate
  • To prioritise their workload and that of their colleagues at times.
  • To project a pleasant, helpful and efficient image to all the Directorates users.
Education and QualificationsGCSE English and Maths at grade 3/D or above (or equivalent e.g. Key Skills Literacy Level 1) or relevant Hospital ExperienceExperiencePatient-facing or customer care work experienceSkills and KnowledgeEffective communication and interpersonal skillsBasic IT skills to use email, MS Word etcThis role will involve in medium to heavy lifting and long periods on your feetPersonal Qualities Friendly, outgoing personality, able to put people at easy quickly,Able to work well as part of a team where people have a wide variety of rolesExample QuestionsDo you have experience working as a PorterAre you happy with medium to heavy liftingAre you happy to be on your feet for this role and walk 3 to 4 miles per dayAre you happy to work shifts within 8am up to 8pm as aboveAre you comfortable portering COVID patients
