Job Description

This role would suit an experienced and hands-on Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who is looking to join a talented and creative Mechanical Engineering team, working to design ground-breaking Life Sciences technology.We are looking for a high-calibre senior mechanical designer with in-depth knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD who can combine team leadership skills, creativity, and engineering design to help develop the next generation of advanced scientific laboratory instruments.The product development role extends from initial concept through to introduction into manufacturing and into the early stages of product support.Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Working in multi-disciplinary teams to develop our next generation of world class scientific laboratory instruments
  • Undertaking maintenance and improvement tasks across our wide range of existing products
  • Build and evaluation of prototype rigs and instruments, leveraging rapid prototyping techniques wherever possible
  • Creating documentation for the manufacturing and support teams
You will be working on cutting edge and fast paced NPD projects helping to develop instruments used in life science research, supporting the Mechanical Engineering team, and undertaking ongoing development maintenance of an extensive product range. You willalso be designing and building prototype rigs and instruments.As a senior mechanical designer, you will also be responsible for assigning and managing the day-to-day workload of the mechanical design team to meet the needs of the business.You will also be responsible for ensuring that the correct procedures are followed for the creation of parts and drawings as well as ensuring adherence to the engineering workflow process and to administer their Solidworks PDM database.Senior Mechanical Design Engineerrequirements:
  • A degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering (or related subject), coupled with a thorough understanding of product development, ideally in scientific/laboratory instrumentation
  • Experience of team leadership or line management
  • Extensive experience in an engineering design environment, ideally in a product development environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of using SolidWorks CAD and PDM
  • A good understanding of the product development process and experience of working in a multi-disciplinary project team.
  • Experience of designing for manufacturability and assembly
  • Practical mechanical engineering skills with a willingness to build and test your prototype designs.
  • First class verbal and written communication skills, proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
In addition, experience of the following would be advantageous:
  • To have held a position of responsibility for SolidWorks CAD and PDM system set up, maintenance, establishing best working practices, continuous improvement of the system, data management and workflows within an engineering design environment.
  • Rapid prototyping for injection moulding
  • Possess hands-on machine shop experience, using manual and CNC machine tools, so you can communicate effectively with suppliers and the internal model shop
