Job Description

TEC Partners are working with a leading biotech who are recruiting an Applications Development Scientist to help support their development of a next generation novel liquid handling technology that enables cutting-edge research. With a focus on genomics,this is a fantastic opportunity to apply your applications knowledge within an exciting new product development project.Applications Development Scientist role:As a key member of the development team, you will help shape the development and delivery of their new liquid handling technology and products. Tasks will be varied, combining in-house lab work, R&D within a multidisciplinary project team, running, provingand improving applications on in-house prototype instruments, and liaising with beta partners and collaborators. You will work as part of a team of development engineers, software engineers and liquid handling specialists to ensure that instrument performancemeets customers needs.Applications Development Scientist profile:

  • Looking for an R&D scientist with at least 3 years of lab experience, familiar with liquid handling automation and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation methods.
  • Looking for experience of product development either directly as part of a product development team or as a scientific collaborator.
  • You can run complex NGS experiments from start to finish without support.
  • You will be capable of running prototype instruments and identifying areas for improvement.
Applications Development Scientist responsibilities:
  • Helping development engineers in clarifying and testing product performance through application of your genomics customer workflow knowledge.
  • When required, liaising between beta customers and development team to identify and enable product improvements.
  • Independently designing and executing novel experiments.
  • Accurately analysing and interpreting experimental data.
  • Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory methods and results.
  • Work safely in a laboratory, maintaining excellent housekeeping whilst following appropriate safety, environment, and risk management systems.
  • Perform laboratory tasks following Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Maintaining the equipment used.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary meetings giving updates and feedback.
Applications Development Scientist requirements:Technical Skills:
  • A 1st or 2:1 degree in a biological science from a leading university
  • Experience of working with automation and ideally automated liquid handling
  • Experience of running NGS library preparation methods and ideally experience of miniaturisation of NGS library preparation
  • Experience of qPCR and DNA fragment size analysis
  • Experience of running absorbance/fluorescence assays
Personal Skills:
  • Excellent communicator - verbal and written with ability to translate complex science into simple messages
  • Experience of working in a product development environment with daily interaction with hardware and software engineers would be of benefit
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Can work independently and is well organised
  • Organised, motivated team-worker with good interpersonal skills
  • Creative thinking and logical problem solving
  • Ability to analyse complex technical data/equipment
  • Fully proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
