Job Description

Lead Technician (Land-Based) x 2Part Time, 18 hours per week/52 weeks per yearPermanentSalary; £20,727 per annum 1 FTE (Pro-rata £10,083)Location; Dearne Valley College Are you ready to take your next step in your career As the lead technician you will be the first person responsible for the welfare and health of the colleges animal collection and for providing full year-round care for all animals and leading on the retail outlet.Your main responsibility as lead technician will be for the well-being of all animals and the overseeing of the land based technical support, supervising other staff and learners on work experience.Other key duties include:

  • General animal husbandry (including cleaning, feeding, watering, providing enrichment and enclosure maintenance).
  • Tours and demonstrations to designated groups and visitors.
  • Designation and supervision of student groups working on the animal collection in line with the requirements of the curriculum intent.
  • Assisting in the construction of apparatus and preparation of materials for use in practical classes and/or demonstrations
  • Cleaning and tidying of enclosures, workshops, laboratories and other practical areas, ensuring the safe and efficient working of equipment within the curriculum area.
  • The maintenance of stock books and other stock records and accurate record keeping
  • Oversee/management of the retail outlet linked to the market garden to ensure it is legally robust and meets the curriculum intent.
We offer courses from Level 1-6 in Animal Care and Animal Management, and Level 1-3 in Horticulture, Forestry and Countryside Management. You will work with a wide variety of animals housed in our modern facilities and in our 12-acre "diamond" forest whichis home to our forestry and arboriculture provision. Now is a very exciting time to join our team.Have you got what it takes to be successfulYou will have extensive experience of working in an animal establishment with a range of different species (including rodents and reptiles). You will have experience of working within a customer focussed environment ensuring all visitors have a positiveexperience. You will possess level 2 literacy and numeracy, first aid and health & safety qualifications. You will also hold, or be working towards, a level 3 or above animal care/land-based qualification.
