Job Description

The salary band for this role is £57,868 - £63,755 per annum, working 36 hours per week. This is a 24-month fixed term contract/ secondment opportunity.We are at an exciting time with our public health role addressing cancer inequalities in Surrey. About the roleThe Public Health team at Surrey County Council has received a grant funding from Macmillan to appoint a cancer inequalities researcher and programme lead for 24 months to improve our knowledge and understanding of groups experiencing inequalities in relationto cancer outcomes and experiences of cancer care across Surrey. Using insights from this research, the position holder will recommend interventions to:
  • Improve access to cancer screening programmes
  • Improve access and referrals to diagnostics
  • Address variations in access to treatment
  • Address inequalities in access to personalised care
  • Improve patient experience and outcomes
Purpose of the role You will work with groups experiencing inequalities within cancer diagnosis, treatment and care to identify solutions and effective interventions that improves their experience and outcomes. This will help all the partners in the system to understand andaccommodate marginalised groups. The recommendations will include changes to care pathways, engagement strategies, and information and support services, to move forward with giving everyone with cancer an equal opportunity to live as well as they can.You will play a key role in developing strong working relationships with system partners and influencing stakeholders who have an interest in cancer care to ensure the programme is aligned with the broader context as well as tailored to reduce health inequalitiesand improve health and wellbeing.In this role you will:
  • Analyse operational data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations for improvements, including redesigning care pathways and informing future projects in local health and social care systems.
  • Utilize diverse data, such as cancer screening rates and lifestyle factors, to address avoidable cancers and assess health needs at diagnosis and end of treatment.
  • Share evidence on health inequalities related to long-term conditions affecting individuals with cancer or co-morbidities.
  • Actively engage patients and staff in community and secondary care settings, implementing solutions through a co-production approach.
  • Organize stakeholder events to capture diverse views and experiences.
  • Recommend practical improvements for inclusive access to services, addressing literacy, language, and functional barriers.
  • Facilitate learning opportunities, including Protected Learning Time sessions and communities of practice, identifying training needs for healthcare professionals.
  • Make recommendations to enhance participation in cancer surveys, informing continuous improvement for patient experiences.

  • Your ability to drive new initiatives using evidence, research and complex data in a meaningful way to tell stories and influence different audiences
  • Your experience of leading on qualitative/ qualitative research and evidence reviews with good analytical skills
  • Good knowledge of cancer care pathway
  • That you hold a Master of Public Health (MPH) with strong public health technical skills
